BILLIE JEAN McCLAIN CARR, born June 1, 1928 in Houston, Texas to Irene Martin and Jennings Brooks McClain, died on September 9, 2002. Ms. Carr is survived by her sons, David, Billy, Michael and daughter-in-law Vanessa; foster daughters, Marsh Huggins and Debra Bunker; grandchildren, Jennifer and David Carr and his wife Contessa; brother, Donald B. McClain and wife Janet; nieces, Tracey and Stacey; nephew, Duff; great nieces and nephews, Connor and Ainsley McClain, Nicole and Isabella Platamone, and Holden & Gillian McLain. Billie was a fierce, fiery, lovable woman who made a powerful impact on all who knew and loved her. She leaves us the task of carrying on the good work with instructions originated by labor leader Joe Hill "Don't mourn - organize." Friends are invited to visitation with the family on Friday, September 13, 2002 from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 14, 2002 in the Main Chapel at Forest Park Lawndale. Interment will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

To Mike and Vanessa Carr and all of the family. I, too, just learned of your mother's passing through Molly Ivin's column. My thoughts are with you as you mourn this significant loss in your lives.

I learned about Billie's death in Molly Ivins' column. I first met Billie in 1972 and she had a profound impact on me. It had been years since I'd spoken with her unfortunately.

I will miss her.

My brother Toby O'Sullivan chided me over the last couple of years to go see Billie, "she's not doing well." It is my great regret that I didn't. I would have told her that she was important in my life. She and my father were the two people who convinced me that government could be a force for good in society and particularly in the lives of those less fortunate. Yes, every letter written, voter registered, door knocked, envelope stuffed do matter in the big scheme of things. I'm glad to have been at Billie's funeral, as she was at the funerals of both my mother and father. Billie was a great friend and a great lady. I miss her but take pride in the part of her that is a part of me.

Billie Carr was a legend in her time. It was such an honor to just be in her presence and to hear her stories of the hard fought battles. She was a great teacher and there was no one like her. She will be greatly missed.

Like Steinbeck's Tom Joad, Billie will always be with us. She'll be in the quiet pride of a deputy voter registrar signing up a brand new Democrat, in a state convention floor fight to insure that our Party reflects its people and wherever "liberal" is embraced instead of dodged.

To the family of Billie Carr,

As a friend of Jennifer Carr, Whenever we would meet I would hear a wonderful story about the grandmother who was so important and special to my friend Jennifer. I sensed that her impact on her family and her community was profound, and her legacy of strong convictions followed by committed action will live on through those who knew, admired and loved her. Her passing is a loss to all of us.

God bless you and keep you. Celebrate her life and carry on with her spirit.

To Billie's Family:

Billie was an inspiration to me when I first entered politics. The endorsement of the Harris County Democrats helped me win my first primary race. She was the true inspiration for all of us Yellow Dog Democrats. I'm sure she is organizing her precinct in heaven right now. Billie always said that Jesus chose to ride on a donkey. I'll miss her.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Aunt Bille was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many. I remember working the polls for her during various campaigns in which we were responsible for taking lunch, dinner and paying the folks working the polls. Aunt Billie would instruct us to wait until the polls were about to close before paying the card pushers. She was afraid they might leave if paid sooner and she wanted those cards pushed as long as possible. I loved Aunt Bille and feel fortunate to have known her. Thanks for letting me in on all the greatness of your family.

Billie set the pattern for many of us. We should rededicate ourselves to the goals she articulated. Achievement of these goals would make Texas and the world more civilized.

Billie Carr was one of a kind and I consider her one of my political mentors. Our closest involvement was in 1982 when I headed the Houston Area Young Democrats and she worked full-time in the Harris County Democratic Party office organizing our party's primary. The general election that followed was the last time that our party won ALL statewide races and we must organize so that will again occur as soon as possible!

She will be greatly missed.

I look forward to sharing stories with others lucky enough to have known her as we gather in Houston to celebrate her great contributions to our party that were also for the greater good of our society and nation.

I first met Billie Carr at a Democratic State Convention in 1976, where I acquired a copy of her book. It was a pleasure to be with her again at the National Convention in 2000, and at State Party meetings that followed.

Her work will continue. She will not be forgotten.
