Claudia Commo

Claudia Commo, LVN, age 68, died Monday, July 22, 2013, in the care of her loving colleagues and friends at Houston Hospice. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa on July 10, 1945, to her parents Kathryn G. and Claude W. Commo. She is survived by her niece, Cynthia Ann Ridling, of Griffin, Georgia.
Ms. Commo's lifelong passion was her nursing career which she pursued with great love and unflagging compassion for 41 years. She graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Vocational Nursing in September, 1972. She worked fulltime as an LVN in a wide variety of settings including St. Luke's Hospital Cardiac Intensive Care, Community School of Vocational Nursing at Eastway General Hospital, Bering-Omega Community Services/Omega House and Houston Hospice. The last 25 years of her career were spent in very challenging, non-profit home and inpatient/residential hospice settings caring for those who were dying; thus she earned widespread respect and admiration in her profession and the communities she served. She was known as a trailblazer in the early days of both HIV and residential hospice care and was frequently called upon to provide teaching and training to nursing and medical students as well as to many volunteer and professional caregivers. Her great skill, her fierce advocacy for the comfort and well-being of her patients and their friends and families, and her always-at-the-ready, quick wit were her trademarks.
Claudia's personal interests and hobbies included reading, gardening and her pets. She always cherished long-term animal companions, her beloved Chihuahua, Gizmo, and, more recently her cat, Clem, and she frequently offered temporary shelter to stray or injured animals in her neighborhood or to pets of friends who could no longer care for them. She also provided years of dedicated service on the Board of Directors of two homeowners' associations in the areas where she resided.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 4, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 600 Pecore, Houston, TX, 77009. In lieu of flowers, please consider remembering Claudia with a donation to Houston Hospice, Bering-Omega Community Services, SPCA/Houston or the .
