Curtis Davis Obituary

CURTIS DONNELL DAVIS (BIG MELLO), age 33, returned home to Christ Saturday, June 15, 2002. He was born on August 7, 1968 in Houston, Texas to Liz Davis of Lake Charles, Louisiana and W.C. Davis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Survivors include his loving wife Tammie Davis of Natchez, Mississippi; his sons Andrew and Chad Davis, both of Houston, Texas, sister Tammy Davis of Houston, Texas; brother Bruce Allen of Houston, Texas; god brother Rodney McKinney of Houston, Texas; god sister Ebony Stewart of Houston, Texas; mother-in-law Irma Bingham-Wilson of Clayton, Louisiana; a uncle, niece, aunts, nephews, cousins and friends. Curtis was preceded in death by his grandmother Z.B. Denagall, of Lake Charles, Louisiana; aunt Hazel Caroline- Hill of Hercules, California. Curtis attended Madison and Yates High School. He also attended Texas Southern University, where he could be heard regularly on KTSU Kidz Jamm a 1980's show that is still around today. He was a longtime member of New Faith Church, until recently when he joined the fellowship of New Light Baptist Church and found his way back to Christ while being a loving Father & Husband. He recently spoke of how proud he was of Andy and Chad, that they were both doing excellent in school (Honor Roll), extra-curricular activities and how he wanted them to continue to be on the Honor Roll through college. Curtis volunteered and shared his knowledge of the game with the boys little league football team( Cowboys), also his favorite team, making sure they would stay on the right path to success so that one day loving mother and wife, Tammy wouldn't have to work. Big Mello, as we all know was full of life and vigor. Anyone who came in contact with him felt his positive presence. He is a friend to all of us, it's just that we won't be able to touch him physically, but spiritually and mentally he will always be in our hearts. We will always here that whistle of his before he was about to give us some news. Big Mello began performing while still in his mothers womb and soon entertaining us soon as that bright smile burst onto the scene. If you ever saw him perform you went away in amazement at the way he captured the audience having a grand command of the stage. Big Mello began his professional career as an entertainer on RAP-A-LOT Records, releasing his first single, "Playing the Game", produced by Bone Hard Productions, from the albums BONE HARD ZAGGIN. It was an album for all. "Prime Time Live" was the song that was played in the locker room before games of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Broderick "Sandman" Thomas, Santana Dotson). His second album Wegonefunkwichamind" enjoyed success with the singles, Funkwichamind" and "Wind Me Up". After years on RAL, Mello signed with N-Terrogation Records and released his third album Southside Story", which indeed told a story. "Sucka Free" and "Gotta Hold On" were the singles released off that album. Mello had just completed work on his fourth album, soon to be released on KMJ Records with friend and label mate Z-Ro. While concentrating on his career and that of helping others he was the hype man for the Ghetto Boys and Scarface, performed with artist such as Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. He was internationally known as he performed in Japan and Alaska. Any beat a person wanted to hear he could beat box it for you. Even while in the studio with Crazy "C", he couldn't tell him the name of the songs, but he could surley beat box it to him. At this very moment I'm positive that he is at his peace, made new friends, cracking jokes on somebody, beat boxing and walking around heaven. Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 20, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at the Brentwood Baptist Church, 13033 Landmark, Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at New Faith Church, 4315 W. Fuqua, Dr. T.R. Williams, Pastor, Rev. John Jasper, officiating. Interment Houston Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Troy B. Smith -Funeral Director

The deepest sympathy I extend to the family of Curtis "Big Mello Davis".

I met Curtis many years ago through his mother Liz whom I worked with. We talked about our children and what not and when she told me her son was in the entertainment business I inquired even more about Curtis because I had once been heavily in the entertainment business and still a musician. Curtis was always busy of course and on the go, working on making things happen but sometimes when he was in the area of my salon, visiting at the record store next door checking on the business of his music he would stop in and talk a while with me. His career was very young at this point and he was always optimistic and had a smile on his face, also of course he was about the business of putting a smile on everyone around him's face. However brief each time I spoke with him or saw him sometimes dashing in and out at his mom's he was always happy.

The news of his homecoming came by way of my son to me and it was most startling. Liz and Tammy I embrace you and encourage you to know that you will see him again. To his wife and children remember that God will always make a way and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Stay strong all of you and be blessed. Liz please call me if you just need to talk or if there is anything that I can do to aid in your time of bereavement. (713) 440-9709 or (713) 676-9241

I first knew him by Curtis. Tammy and Curtis was so close to me that we considered ourselves cousins. We grew up in Almeda Plaza and went from Petersen to Dowling and Madison together. My mom made a batman cake for one of Curtis' birthdays and he loved it so that he would still talk about that cake 5 years later. When his first album came out he was so happy he was giving away free copies. I asked him how do you expect to make money if you're giving the album away, he thought about it and asked me for $10.

My heart dropped when I heard he was gone, the light that shined so bright for so long is gone. He touched so many, so deeply that he will live on, through his children, friends, family and music.

I love and miss you Curtis.....

A true friend in deed. I framed your obiturary, picture and the rose from the casket today, I'll hang it on my wall.

I went to the scene where this all happened and left you a flower - after, I went to visit your Mother again for the first time in a long time. She is well considering.

My deepest condolences to the Davis family. Curtis was a great friend to all who knew him. He was the first person to ever support me when it was my first time on stage, performing in front of a crowd. He even beatboxed for me as well as gave encouraging words. Even though he is no longer with us, those that knew him can still hear him in our hearts.

To the Davis Family,

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you. This is a great loss. At this time you feel a big loss and your heart hurts deeply. Time will heal all wounds. Now you feel that it will hurt forever. I just recently loss my Father on June 3, 2002. I feel a deep loss and I would like to shre a poem that I found.

Sleep, little brother, far from pain.

Water smooths out in the river

As memory calms the chaos

You left behind. Rest easy Daddy,

Your babies are older than you ever were.

Even the stain will fade

When none are left to remember

The calls for help you never made.

After burning, blackberry, bushes

Struggle up through ash, and love, resilient,

Blooms in all seasons, even for you

Who suffered and could not tell what was right

As you hurled yourself, suddenly

Spiraling upward to darkness or light.

He can live anywhere in the universe, but He chose... your heart.

Face it friend, He is crazy about you!

Mello-

I haven't seen you in awhile, and I hate to think I won't see you for a while longer. I know you are in Heaven now because the love of your friends sent you there. I passed the spot where you left us and just to see the love from the hood made me feel good. Never a bad thing to say about anyone, you were a gem. My best memory is of you, me and my cousin Shelly in Surside, when "Sprinke Me" came out and we were cruisin' in my Jeep and you "Sprinkled" everybody. that still brings a smile to me. I think i still have your hat you left in my Jeep. if not, I still have your love in my heart. Peace, Love, blessin's...hope to see you in Heaven.

I first met Curtis in 1979 when we played football for the Brentwood Dolphins in Hiram Clark, and after our first day of practice, I instantly knew I had made a friend for life and he gave me a nick name that he still called me by after 23 years "Horse". I am unshamed to say that I was biased when listening to him perform, I was a huge supporter of his I took his first album international even before he did, as I was stationed in Japan at the time. The first album to the last was special to me because, I did'nt know Jay-Z or DMX but I knew Big Mello aka Curtis Davis and his struggle to get where he did and I was a witness to God's work in progress through this young man our hearts are heavy our eyes are filled with tears, Tammie,Andy, and Chad I know your burden is heavy but stay strong. I will miss Curtis but I will visit him in my mind. May God Bless and Keep all of the Davis family and friends.

To the Family of Curtis Davis,

I would like to extend my condolences. In times like these, it's perfectly normal to question God. But remember that we all have an appointed time here on earth. When it's time,God calls us home. Just find comfort in knowing that God plucked one of his flowers from this flowerbed that we call life. Curtis is joking and clowning at this very moment. In knowing Curtis as long as I have,I know that he wouldn't want us crying for long. That just isn't the way Curtis lived. He would want us to remember him and what he was trying to do. Curtis lived through his music and we will always have them to remember him. The wonderful part is that we will get to see Curtis again. "Weep not, Weep not, for he is not dead, he is resting in the bosom of Jesus." May God continue to give you comfort during this difficult time.

I Love you all,

I would like to send my deepest sympathy to Tammi, the kids, Ms. Liz and Tammy. Continue to stay prayerful, that will see you through these melancholy times. It seems like I've been knowing Curtis all my life, before he ever thought of being Big Mello, from elementary on to adulthood. We grew up in the same neighborhood. (AP) Curtis was always making you laugh. He always had jokes or something to say about you. He was a very high spirited person. It's been hard to come to grips with just accepting the fact that he's no longer physically going to be here. I am truly sadden by the lost of Curtis and the fact that he didn't truly get to see his music fully go to the level that he diligently worked for. He was a talented man and will truly be missed. I send my blessing to The Davis Family.

My prayers go out to Liz, Tammey and his wife and kids along with the rest of his family. I grew up with Curtis and Tammey in the Plaza and we attended grade school thru high school together. Curtis was always singing and clowning and he will be missed. I'm just still in shock because I just talked to Curtis for about 2 hours in Erv's Klip Joint about a month ago and he was telling me all about his wife and sons. Tammey he was proud of being married and about working on his next album. God does things for a reason that we may never know or understand, but God is a Good God and he will see you through this. You will see Curtis again. May he rest in peace.

He was always a prankster but all in good fun. He will be truly missed. God Bless, for Curtis is gone but not forgotten. To: His sister Tammy, Bruce, Victor B., Victor M., Record Label, fans and the rest of his family his memories will live on and again God Bless. TPage/Tri-Page Entertainment

I am a friend of Tammy Davis (Sister).I also attended several of Curtis's performance during his promotion of South Side Story

(Album) and I attended Madison High School as well.I always felt that Curtis was a very spirtitual person who knew God. My prayers go out to his family and friends. He may not be with us physically, but he will always be with us spritually. I encourage you to be strong and God will get you through this tough time in your lives. I will be praying with you and for you.

I first met Curtis when a friend connected us to help me get into the music game, I saw Curtis last at Crazy C's wedding and it was refreshing to see that this cat was still pressing forward. His determination will be a legacy that his kids and those close to him will remember and benefit from, I will!

You will be missed homie!

To the family of Curtis Davis you will be in my prayers. I knew Curtis from Madison High School, he was always joking around and singing all the time. We all knew he was going to be famous. All of us will miss him. I also knew J.J. his mother lives across the street from my mother and his sister and I are best friends. They both will be loved and missed by everyone. May God continue to bless the families of both of these young men.
