EFRAIN A. GOMEZ M.D. Obituary
EFRAIN A. GOMEZ, M.D., age 82, beloved husband and father, passed away September 29, 2010. He was born in Jauja, Peru and came to the USA in 1957 following graduation from the National Major University of San Marcos University, School of Medicine, Lima , Peru.He is survived by his loving wife Gerda of 48 years, son Thomas Gomez and daughter Margaret Gomez and sisters Betty Gomez, Evelina Gomez, Charo Repetto, and brothers Enrique Gomez and Antonio Gomez of Lima, Peru and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish their precious memories of him and the devotion he had to his family.Efrain completed medical/ surgical internship and psychiatric residency training in New York Medical College, Valhalla, NY and fellowship in neurology and psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y. and was a psychoanalytic candidate at Columbia University, Psychoanalytic Clinic for Training and Research, New York, N.Y. He was Board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology.Efrain dedicated his life to his patients and students for over 55 years. He used to say "I'm not a teacher, I'm a learner and my supreme teachers are my patients and students." Academic appointments included: Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y.; Professor, The University of Texas Medical School of Houston, Houston, TX; and Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. In addition honorary professorships were at the following : Professor Extraordinario de la Facultad de Medicina, University of Guadalajara, Mexico; Honorary Professor, Complutense University, Madrid, Spain; Honorary Professor, San Marcos University, Lima, Peru; Distinguished Visiting Professor, Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia, Lima Peru; and Fellow of the Interamerican College of Physicians and Surgeons, N.Y.,N.Y. He was a prolific writer his entire life with over 100 papers in reviewed journals, seven books, and fifty chapters in books and multiple invited papers. He was a member of the following editorial boards: Revista de Psyquiatria, Lima, Peru; The Journal of Bronx Psychiatric Center, Bronx, N.Y.; Psicopatolgia, Madrid, Spain; International Review of Psychiatry; International Journal of Eclectic Psychotherapy; and Intermerican College of Physicians and Surgeons. Toward the latter part of his life he developed a special love of poetry and published one book of poetry in English. He continued being an avid reader and writer until his last days.Memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 24, 2010, at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 6700 Ferris.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
