James Juhn Obituary

JAMES HUNGWOO JUHN, passed away from heart problems on July 17, 2005. He was born in 1931 to Jung Yeol Juhn and Yoo Hee Kwon in the Kang Won province in Korea. He attended Seoul National University until the commencement of the Korean War. He transferred to the Korean Air Force Academy from which he graduated in 1954. In 1956, he married Sanghui Lee, who became his life partner. In 1957 he received a master's degree from Seoul National University in Law. He rose through the ranks of the Korean Air Force retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1965. He then joined the Civilian Air Bureau of the Korean government. He rose to be Chief of the Bureau, a position equivalent to the Chairman of the FAA in the U.S. government, in which capacity he represented Korea at a number of international civil aviation gatherings. In 1969, not wanting to participate in the corruption that was occurring in the Korean government at the time, he immigrated to the United States. He was later able to bring over his wife and child and brothers and sisters and their families to immigrate to the U.S. He received an MBA from New York University in 1972 and joined General Motors in the Finance department in New York. He later moved to Detroit where he was a founder of the Korean Automotive Executives Association of which he was the second president. In 1988 he joined Allied Signal and was stationed in Seoul overseeing some of their operations there. He retired and moved to Houston in 1992. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Sanghui and his only child Chinhui Juhn Allen, her husband Edward R. Allen III, and two grandchildren Jessica and Jenny. He was predeceased by his father, mother and brother Suk Woo Juhn; is survived by his sister Myung Woo Oh and husband Chung H. Oh; sister Young Lim and husband Thomas Yu; nephew Insung Juhn and wife Eunjoo Juhn; In Houston, he leaves behind many members of his extended family in the Risher Randall and Nancy C. Allen families. A remembrance service will be held at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway at Eldridge, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday July 19, 2005. Visitation will take place there from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Korean Central Presbyterian Church, 14311 Park Row, Houston, TX 77084.
