John O'Neil Obituary

JOHN O'NEIL (b.1915), noted American artist and educator, died on October 11, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital, Houston TX. He was Chairman, Department of Art, Rice University from 1965-70; Director, Sewall Art Gallery, 1971-77; and Joseph/Jonna Nazro Mullan Professor Emeritus, Art and Art History, 1980. From 1951-1965, he was Director, School of Art, University of Oklahoma. He received a B.F.A. (1936); M.F.A. in Painting (1939) from the University of Oklahoma. From 1943-46, he served as topographer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa and Washington DC. Recipient of numerous awards, grants and fellowships, John is listed in Who's Who in American Art; Archives of American Art; and Personaggi Contemporaneii, Italy. His work has been presented in over 100 exhibitions and his paintings are in many private and public art collections. Copies of John O'Neil's personal papers 1945-1978 are preserved at Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art. He is survived by his nieces and nephews Carolyn Cram, Sharon Miller, Jim O'Neil, Jr., John O'Neil, William O'Neil, John Russell, Tom Russell, and their families. I knew him while at Rice in the 60s, though not well. I met him again in the 70s. I can't claim a great friendship, but was always an admirer of his skill, talent and gentle nature.
