GILLMAN
Ramsay Gillman, born in Houston, Texas on the 1st of February 1944, the son of Frank and Lula Gillman, died on Friday, the 3rd of June in his home in Houston. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Barton Gillman. He is survived by his beloved wife and companion of 35 years, Stevie Gillman, daughter, Stacey Gillman Wimbish and her husband, Frank; son, Jason Gillman and his wife, Brittany; and son, Christopher Gillman. Grandchildren include Grace Wimbish, Frankie Wimbish, Jace Gillman and Cavan Gillman.
At the time of his death, Ramsay was serving as Chairman of the Board of the Gillman Companies, one of the largest privately held automobile dealership groups in the country.
The son of a pioneer automobile dealer, Ramsay began his automotive career working in the parts department of his father's Pontiac dealership in downtown Houston. After attending the General Motors Dealer Management Institute and other specialized schools, he became an authorized dealer in 1967.
Ramsay served as a Director for the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) from 1989 through 1999. He was elected as President of NADA in 1997. During his years as a Director, Ramsay was a member of the NADA Industry Relations Committee, the NADA Regulatory Affairs Committee and was Chairman of the NADA Government Relations Committee in 1993 and in 1999. At the time of his death, Ramsay was serving as a Trustee for the NADA Charitable Foundation and for the NADA Dealers Election Action Committee.
Ramsay served as President of the Houston Automobile Dealers Association and Vice President of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association. In 1984, Ramsay was appointed Vice Chairman of the Texas Motor Vehicle Commission by Mark White, then Governor of Texas and served for 3 years. At the time of his death he was serving as a board member of the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles appointed by Rick Perry, Governor of Texas.
Ramsay received the 1996 Sports Illustrated All-Star Dealer Award, presented by the American International Automobile Dealers Association, for his lifelong contribution to the automotive business and commitment to numerous charitable organizations.
In 1997, the State of Texas House of Representatives passed House Resolution No. 350, officially commending Ramsay for his "outstanding achievements" and years of dedication to the State of Texas, the automobile industry, his community, and charitable organizations. In 2009, The Texas Automobile Dealers Association honored Ramsay with the lifetime achievement Automotive Legends Award.
Charitable organizations that receive support from the Gillman family include the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Youth Scholarship Program, the Fort Bend County Women's Center, which provides shelter for abused women and their children, the Earning by Learning Program, which rewards young children for reading books, the Ronald McDonald House, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Sickle Cell Association.
Ramsay was an exceptional storyteller, always with a moving or humorous tale for every occasion. He lived life over the top, was a true friend, a great mentor, and enjoyed every phase of living. An expert golfer, ardent outdoorsman, an extraordinary fisherman and proficient hunter, he packed over 100 years of living in the 67 years we were privileged to enjoy his companionship and company.
A Celebration of Ramsay's remarkable life is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 8th of June, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where the Rev. Peter Miller, Pastor of Caring Ministries, is to serve as the officiant.
For those desiring, in lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Ramsay's name may be directed to the Fort Bend Women's Center, P.O. Box 183, Richmond, TX, 77406; the Houston Automobile Dealers Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 16550, Sugar Land, TX., 77496-6550; the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation, P.O. Grace, I promised I would tell you this experience...and here it is.
Many years ago, my husband and I were aboard The Gillman plane with several other friends (the Montgomerys and Kay Convery) flying from Austin to Houston with Stevie and Ramsay. A short while after taking off, the pilot announced that we were returning to the Austin airport (saying something about a change in the weather.) As we were landing, I looked out my window and saw three firetrucks speeding toward our plane. I said "Look, what are all these fire trucks for??" Ramsay, who was sitting in the co-pilot seat next to the pilot, leaned around and said
"They are for US !!" He was pale and sweating. Firemen in silver fire-proof suits ushered us off the plane in a hurry. We were puzzled and we all huddled in a group on the tarmac. Then Ramsay (still shaking) told us how the pilot had said to him "Mr Gillman, look out your window and see if you see any smoke or flames ...my instrument panel says the right engine is on fire!" Ramsay said he nearly broke his neck looking to the right !! He did not see anything.
(We found out a little later that there had been an electrical malfunction in the panel...and there was no fire after all.)
It was quite an adventure (thankfully with a good ending). Stevie can tell you this story, she tells it better than anyone...(except Ramsay...who was the best and funniest "storyteller" I ever knew. He was special.)
May God bless you all with His peace as only He can do.
Love,
Faith Wainwright

The year was 1997. Ramsay Gillman became President of the National Automobile Dealers Association in Atlanta. We had a Texas party for him at the Atlanta Hyatt Hotel. A KING-SIZE Texas flag was hung, as well as a giant banner with Ramsay's picture on it. A country-western band from Houston played and we did the Texas two-step. It was the best party in Atlanta ! Ramsay did an outstanding job as NADA Chairman. He did more for the Houston and Texas dealer groups than anybody we know. Over the years, we have shared many Ramsay "stories".
He was a good friend to us. You could always count on him !
The entire Gillman family is special.
All of you will remain in our thoughts and prayers. We will greatly miss Ramsay...a true Texas legend !!!
Love,
Walter and Faith Wainwright

Dear Gillman family - this is such sad sad news. My history with Ramsay, goes all the way back to his kidding and joking in Mrs. Paulette's english class at Kinkaid. I hadn't seen him in years but remember with fondness the fun we had. I pray that all the love and affection and stories and wonderful memories will be the soft cushions that your aching hearts can land on and rest.

A fine man who lived a quality life. I was fortunate to have been able to work with Ramsay and the Gillman organization for many years and their character and quality was always clearly demonstrated and rock solid.

I was particularly impressed to observe Ramsay's overwhelming affection and love for his children as he mentored them in preparation for the passing of the torch. I'm sure he is looking down and smiling right now.

A life well lived.

The news of Ramsay's death hurts me deeply. If Ramsay Gillman was your friend, he was certainly your friend. Serious, crazy, hard worker, great fun lover, outlandish, down to earth; all of the characteristics which make up an anacronysm of a personality which was Ramsay. I could go on and on. Friends since Middle school (ABC's - some of you know what that really means). Everyone knows what a great car salesman he was. He sold me my first real car; a Candy Apple Red, Two Door, 1964 Pontiac GTO sedan, with four on the floor, a 389, four barrel carb and Hurst Linkage (no A/C yet at that time) that was sitting on static display on the Gillman Pontiac lot downtown at Milam and Pease, if I remember correctly. I cruised the United States several times at 90 MPH in that beast, looking for someone to pass on the highway. I passed all of them. There are so many things that I would love to say that I dare not say here. I already miss him dearly; I will even miss losing money to him at the card table. Stevie, Stacey, Jason and Chris, your dad will be dearly missed by me and many, many others. He is my friend. He, along with all of you, are in my thoughts and prayers. My love to you all.

For all of the ups and downs I experienced in my 13 years with Mr. Gillman, the one I most remember is his greeting when I knocked on his open office door. "Come on in; what may I do for you?" He was genuine. Later, what I asked of him came to pass. Good man! Without a doubt, he will be missed. Stevie, Stacey, Jason and Christopher - May God bless you to keep the Gillman legacy as he most certainly has.

Please accept my deepest sympthy to the family for the loss of Ramsey. My father was a Pontiac dealer in a dealership in Virginia. My brother and Barton attended Pontiac "school" together in Flint. When I came to Houston in the middle 60's, I met both of the brothers + Big Frank. They took good care of my Pontiac those years; I bought a Honda from them later. Ramsey was certainly larger than life and will be missed.
