William Baker Obituary
William Albert Baker
1946-2018
William Albert Baker was born March 20, 1946, in San Angelo, TX, to Albert and Nana Baker. Bill received his Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Texas Tech University, and following his graduation went to work for U.S. Steel as an industrial engineer. Bill worked for several manufacturing companies throughout his career, with his last position at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for 13 years as a supervisor in Facilities Management.
Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice Going Baker; his daughter Lucy Starbranch and her husband Nelson James; the light of his life, his grandson and namesake Nelson William; and his cousin Susan Langford and her extended family. Bill was an avid sportsman, sailing and racing his sailboat on Galveston Bay for many years, and crewing for friends who raced. He ran the Napa Valley Marathon, several Houston Marathons, and later worked at stations along that route. Downhill skiing was a passion for him, especially with his family and friends. Bill completed the MS-150 several times. He loved riding his motorcycles, including rides to California and most weekends. More recently, Bill enjoyed working at the polling stations during elections.
A memorial service for Bill will be held Tuesday, December 18 at 4:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave., Houston, TX 77002. Immediately following, all are invited to a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Hope Housing, 3315 Harrisburg Boulevard, Suite 400 Houston, Texas 77003
