MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexican mariachi singer and actor Antonio Aguilar, who recorded more than 150 albums and began his acting career during Mexico's "Golden Era" of cinema, has died in Mexico City. He was 88.

Aguilar died late Tuesday after a long fight with pneumonia, Medica Sur hospital spokeswoman Shere Sanchez said.

Born in the northern state of Zacatecas, Aguilar recorded with his traditional mariachi group for 50 years and sold more than 25 million records. His hit songs include "Triste Recuerdo," "Albur de Amor," "Gabino Barrera" and "Puno de Tierra."

He appeared in 167 films, including "The Undefeated" starring John Wayne.

In 2000, he got a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Aguilar's son, singer Pepe Aguilar, is also one of Mexico's best-known performers and has been nominated for a Latin Grammy six times.

The elder Aguilar was the first Mexican artist to mix concerts with rodeos in shows that featured his actress-singer wife, Flor Silvestre, his two children and dancing horses. In the 1970s, he took his show to major cities in the United States and Latin America.

"Antonio was the one to open doors for us in the United States and in Latin America with his great show," said ranchera singer Vicente Fernandez.

"I love to be in the USA," he told hundreds of fans who gathered for the occasion. "This is one of the most important episodes of my life. I never expected this."

He was the best. I met him and his family when pepito was months old and Antonio Hijo was about 10 years old coming out a Madison square garden show. Antonio Aguilar was a great person I think he never thought himself has a star he was a simple person. I have never met an actor like him. I have seen other famous actor and singers that we're very rude. Antonio never turn down an authograph seeker. The is not a singer and actor on this earth like him.

Antonio, your legacy lives on. I first heard your music in 2002. I fell in love with your music. In 2007 I moved to Durango Mexico and started watching your movies. I have many of your C.D's and most of your movies. I listen and watch them often. When my mother-in-law passed away we hired a mariachi band to play all your music at her funeral. She loved you as well. I know she is happy to be in Heaven with you now. I listen to Pepe and your grandchildren now as well. I have passed your music on to my grandchildren to enjoy. I am sure everyone in Heaven enjoys your music. We miss you down here but one day we will see and listen to you again.

Hi I want to sent my deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. father knew Mr. Aguilar back in Zacatecas. We attended many of his Rodeos at the L.A. Sports Arena. I can remember as a little girl sitting in the arena and watching Mr. Aguilar on his horse and thinking that I one day would like to ride and show my horse to dance like his. I will always treasure the times that we did go see him and his family. I remember that my mom said that his son (Pepe) was hi "Gringo" and that he was the one that performed with his parents along with the his brother and Mom. God Bless you and you are always in my prayers.

For Antonio...You recorded more
than 150 albums. All to
be remembered by your thousands
of fans.

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I had the pleasure of knowing Antonio Aguilar for many years and I must say that he was one of the most wonderful people that I had ever met. He was nice, funny, and so full of life. I started going to his shows at the age of 6 and continued going until I was an adult. Although each show was the same, there were times I would go to 2 shows on Sat, 2 on Sunday and if was a long weekend, then 2 on Monday...I never got tired of his shows, they were awesome. I was able to stay backstage in-between shows and got to see the "Real Antonio" and man was he GREAT! I wish everyone would have had the opportunity to meet him. May he rest in peace!

As a child raised in a Mexican American home knowing our culture was always very important to all of our family. Listening to the songs was part of our family life and still is. My first rodeo was a rodeo that the Aguilar family put on in Phoenix,Arizona many years ago I was only a kid and now I am 40 and still remember feeling the pride and being amazed at what I was seeing done with a horse and the performance of all the Aguilar family. To this day I sing the corridos I have learned through the years as I drive home. I will pass on the pride of culture and love of family to my children as Antonio did to his children. My deepest sympathy to the entire family.
