AVIS GORDON, 53, passed on February 22, 2010 in her home in Humble TX, after a tremendous fight with breast cancer.She was born on October 31, 1956 in Miami, Fl.Mrs. Gordon was a doctor of Education candidate at Texas Southern University and had a passion for helping high school students prepare for college, with an emphasis on historically black colleges.Mrs. Gordon is survived by her husband, Leroy Gordon, Humble Tx, and daughter, Marquieta Minor-Gordon, Boston MA; step-daughters Terri Gordon, Houston TX and Sonia Jordan, Houston TX. She is further survived by her parents, Alton and Catherine Jackson, Miami FL; sister Adrienne Jackson, Tallahassee FL; brothers Alton Jackson, FT. Lauderdale FL, and Harold Jackson, Enterprise AL; grandson Marcellus Jordan, Jr.; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.Viewing service will be held on Sunday, February 28 from 5pm-7pm at Brookhollow Baptist Church Queenston Campus.Her funeral service will be held Monday, March 1 at 11am at Brookhollow Baptist Church Eldridge Campus.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the NIB Scholarship Fund, P.O. My sincerest condolences go out to the Gordon and Jackson families. I worked closely with Avis at the Center for Academic Prep and was shocked to hear of her passing.

AS FULL AS HER PLATE WAS, SHE ALWAYS MADE ROOM ON THAT SAME PLATE FOR OTHERS. SHE TOOK TIME OUT TO MAKE SURE THAT MY SON SHANNON HAD HIS PAPAERWORK TOGETHER FOR COLLEGE. THE TIME SHE TOOK TO HELP US WAS, THAT OF PATIENCE AND LOVE. AN ANGEL IS GONE BACK HOME AND WE HAD THE PRIVILEDGE OF KNOWING HER JUST A LITTLE WHILE. I WOULD ALWAYS SAY TO HER "I LOVE YOU " AND SHE WOULD SAY IT BACK. I MISS HER SO MUCH. AND WE HERE AT MD ANDERSON WILL MISS HER. BUT I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT I WAS ONE OF HER FAVORITE PHLEBOTOMISTS, BUT SHE LOVED US ALL. TO THE FAMILY OF MRS. GORDON: "LOVE YOU " RUTH AND SHANNON

Jerry: Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. It sucks and can't be explained - but it's all part of our Lord's plan and your beautiful Mom is truly in a better place. Hello Jerry,

Please accept my sympathy. I was fortunate to meet you mom at a very wonderful ocassion - your graduation from BU School fo Public Health. She was a very gracious and beautiful woman. You are blessed with those traits. Stay strong. You have friends that love you very much and are here to support you. Please extend my regards to your dad and the rest of the family. May the Lord grant you the peace that surpasses all understanding.

To the Gordon Family - Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Rejoice in knowing that your loved one has gone on to a much better place where there is no more pain or suffering. Leroy and family - Our prayers are with you on this day. We will miss the beautiful smile that Avis always had when you saw her. My condolences to the entire family of Avis Gordon.
I met Avis quite some years ago in the home of Anetra, Charles and Evelyn Mosley.
What a remarkable impression she made;her labors of love was so inspiring. I didn't get the priviledge
of knowing her in a more personal way, however, she had to be a special jewel......she was the daughter of Alton and Catherine Jackson.

Marquietta, Leroy, Mama Jackson and Daddy Jackson and all of the Jackson clan, your adopted sister Lois in Miami can not be with you in these hours of darkness, but my prayers go out to you and my thoughts are with you as Avis was with me in my hours of sorrow. It is hard, but God will sustain and keep you in these dark hours. Remember that Avis fought a good fight and will not have the pain anymore. She will be greatly missed.

To the Gordon Family,

"Cast your cares upon the Lord and he will sustain you." Psalms 55:22a

The need you face is great, but the grace that is yours in Christ is even greater. As He has done so many times before, God will be your refuge and your strength. Just as you have provided solace for so many others, may you now be engulfed by the peace and solace of God.

Mrs. Avis' life was dedicated to His glory, her body his temple and her heart the Spirit's workshop. She left a legacy to be emulated by others in the beauty of her labor, character and testimony. I will deeply miss her wisdom, smile and working with her on first Sunday during the preparation of the Lord Supper.

Love lives on forever... in the memories, in the stories and in the hearts of all the lives she touched. May God continue to strengthen you each day as you continue to trust in Him and his word is my prayer. Be assured God is holding your hand and will not let go!
