Darryl Wiesenthal Obituary

Darryl Jay Wiesenthal passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Darryl was born in Houston on August 25, 1961. He attended Bellaire High School and graduated from Southwest Texas State University. As a pre-teen, Darryl began what would be his favorite job ever! He became one of the ball boys for the Houston Oilers, a job he held for many years even after he graduated from college. He was affectionately known as "Lightning" by the players and coaching staff. While working in his family's business, Harolds in the Heights, he still took off to help the Oilers whenever possible.
Darryl spent his entire career in retail; a career that began at Harold's in the Heights and continued at Nordstrom Galleria. His warm smile and his sweet disposition won him many loyal customers who became his friends. Darryl's kindness was legendary. He never met a stranger.
Darryl was a loving son, grandson, brother, uncle, cousin and friend and will be missed by many. He is predeceased by his father, Harold Wiesenthal, his grandparents, Goldie and Emanuel Wiesenthal, his nephew, Jonathan Winkler, his uncles, Milton Wiesenthal and Arnold Walkow and his aunt and uncle Lillian and Buddy Pollak.
Darryl is survived by his mother, Eleanor Lonschein and her husband David, his brother, Michael Wiesenthal and his wife, Shelley, his sister, Tammy Winkler and her husband, John, his nephews and nieces Alexandra and Jared Wiesenthal and Sterling and Whitney Winkler, his aunt, Ruth Walkow and numerous cousins and friends.
Pallbearers are Lynn Ballard. Kenneth Caplan. Michael Caplan. Larry Feingersh. Richard Brown. Larry Stein. Brad Schultz. A C. Centeno.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Congregation Beth Yeshurun in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary, 4525 Beechnut.
Following the service, interment will take place at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery, 1037 N. Post Oak Road.

I met Darryl in the early 70's when I was working for "Harold's In The Heights". His daddy, Harold, brought him in one Saturday and said to me, "Here Roy, give him some work to do here in the stock room." Once Harold left the room and I gave Darryl a project to do Darryl put his hands on his hips and looked up at me and said, "You can't tell me what to do....My daddy ownes this place." Daryyl made me laugh back then and he kept his sense of humor throughout his life. Darryl you will be greatly missed......

Tammy, John and Family...As with Harold, I only had a handful of conversations with Darryl over the years...Most of them were during Rodeo Houston when he was manning the booth and selling lots of beautiful western styled shirts...As many have already stated here, you only had to meet Darryl once to feel like you'd been friends forever...Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

I am in total shock to learn of Darryl's sudden and untimely passing. I just saw him at his father's service, but it wasn't until we decided to go to the cemetary that my husband and I really got to see and speak with the family, including Darryl, of course. I hadn't seen him in several years, but he was the same wonderfully genuine, friendly guy I had always known him to be. We embraced more than once and got to talk for a while. I am so thankful for that time with him. I am saddened beyond belief, and I will never forget Darryl and his warm smile. Sincerely, Carol Jamail McAliley

I met Darryl only a year ago when we began a weekly Leadership group together. Throughout the past year, Darryl underwent two major surgeries as well as the recent passing of his dad. During this time Darryl became amazingly self expressed and authentic. Darryl did the work on himself and left this world a Champion at the top of his game. He became a Leader and sets the example for the rest of us in his group. I will miss you, Darryl.

I met Darryl years ago at Bum Phillip's Golf Tournament out at Sugar Creek Country Club, and instantly was won over by his kindness, great sense of humor, and enjoyed a great tournament afternoon with him and Dan Pastorini talking about old Oiler days. Darryl helped us many times at his father's store in the Heights and even helped me in recent years at Nordstrom in the men's department. What a great loss for our community, and my condolences go out to his family. I will always remember the many great times I've had with Darryl.

He was so much fun to be around, always excited about the simple things and always had something to laugh about. I always smile when I think of him and the blast we had for that brief year we spent as roomates and helping each other out.

I went to work at the store on Darryl's twelfth birthday. Of course there was a cake and I did not know him then but I don't think a somewhat shy young man felt totally comfortable standing there celebrating in the middle of the sales floor. However, over the next couple of years, I would spend quite a bit of time with Darryl as he was made to come to my office to do his homework. I soon came to know a witty, gregarious and intelligent young man "Lightning" (his nickname) and I had many a conversation over the next 18 years. I can only say that he had a good heart and will be missed.
