Robert Brickhouse Obituary

Robert Brickhouse, Artist, Robert Louis Brickhouse, 76, native of Beaumont, Texas, and long- time resident of Houston, died April 16, in his art studio at his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Brickhouse was an award-winning painter whose work was recognized with gold and silver medals from the Dallas, Denver and Houston Art Directors Clubs, top awards from Art League Houston and an Award of Excellence from the New York Society of Illustrators. His paintings are included in the private collections of Charlie Thomas, former owner of the Houston Rockets; actor Clint Eastwood; and Brown and Root and Powell Co., a series of paintings for their Paris offices. His work exhibited at the Meredith Long Gallery in Houston and multiple galleries in San Miguel de Allende. His last show, "Continuum - From Beaumont to San Miguel" exhibited in 2013 at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. Brickhouse began painting at age three. After graduating from high school he honed his craft at Lamar University and the Texas Academy of Art before launching his career in commercial advertising as a freelance graphic artist. Brickhouse taught at Sam Houston State University where he inspired his students to develop their skills and follow their dreams of becoming artists. After a long career in the commercial advertising industry in Houston, he retired to San Miguel de Allende in Central Mexico where he spent the last 14 years concentrating exclusively on fine art. This picturesque, colonial town provided the inspiration and setting for much of his work. Brickhouse is survived by his daughter, Valarie Brickhouse of Houston; son, Christian Brickhouse of Hawaii; son-in-law, Mark Herrera of Trinidad; grandchildren, Brandilyn, Michael, and Kristena Herrera; great grandson, Croix Carmichael; grand children- in-law, Sean Carmichael, Carolina Herrera (all of Houston); brother, J. Earl Brickhouse of Beaumont; former wives, Sandra Brickhouse of Owensboro, KY, and Jackie Murders of Houston; and innumerable nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mabel Brickhouse; sisters, Stella Russell, and Carol Brickhouse. His memory and legacy will be honored at 10:30 a.m. this Friday, May 30th, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079.

I knew Robert in Houston in the 60's and I am saddened to hear of his passing. He had all of the good qualities, and was hard working. Our talent pool just lost a great one.
