Jane Huge Vernon Obituary
June Marie Huge Vernon
Jane Bennett Huge Vernon was born July 31, 1927, and went home to her Lord on December 6, 2014. She was born in Normangee, Texas, the daughter of Mac Leon Bennett, a renowned criminal attorney and judge and his second wife, Mardie Jinkins Bennett, the town postmaster. She graduated from the University of Texas at the age of 18, and married her sweetheart, Gus Huge, just returned from World War II. They settled in Houston, and spent many happy years raising their children in their Spring Branch home. During those years, Jane taught first grade at Woodview Elementary School. She completed a Master's degree and became a school counselor at Spring Forest Junior High School. Jane and Gus were active members of St. Mark Lutheran Church where they founded a ministry to visit hospitalized church members. Jane served on the school board of St. Mark School, was president of her chapter of American Business Women's Association, was a life-long member of music sorority Mu Phi Epsilon, and learned the skill of investing in a ladies' investment club. Jane (on accordion) and Gus (on banjo) became active members of the Bayou Banjo Club, and after retirement, played often all over the greater Houston area, After two years of widowhood, Jane married Roy Vernon, a special late-in-life love. They attended Memorial Drive Christian Church and were happily married for eleven years. Jane continued to perform music on her accordion as she and Roy were members of the Jubilee Banjo Band and other performing groups. When she no longer felt able to live at home, Jane moved to the Treemont Community in 2011 where she was cared for by family and the excellent Treemont staff until her passing. Jane is survived by daughter and son-in-law Susan Huge Heaslet and Don Heaslet. Although Jane and Gus' son Rick died in 2011, Jane is survived by Rick's son Jonathan Williams, wife Jill, and their son Tyler Williams. Other family members include stepson Roger Vernon and wife Susan Vernon, Roger and Susan's son and daughter-in law Ches and Silvia Smith and their three children Sarah, Cristian, and Max. Jane is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service honoring Jane's life will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Drive Christian Church, 11750 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024.
