Shannon Young Obituary
Shannon Eden Young
1924-2015
On August 21, 2015, Shannon Eden Young left this world to be with his Lord and Savior, at the age of 91. He was admired and respected by everyone who knew him and will be deeply missed. There will be a viewing on Sunday, August 30th from 3 to 5 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Leander. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31st at 11 a.m. in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel followed by interment at the Bagdad Cemetery.
Shannon was born on July 11, 1924 in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Reagan High School in 1941 and Taylor Radio School in 1942.
Shannon enlisted in the Marine Corps on November 19, 1943. He attended radio schools before active duty and later served in World War II in the Pacific Theater at Kwajalein, Eniwetok, and Peleliu. As a rifle marksman, he shot coconuts out of the island trees when work was slow. He attained the rank of Corporal before being discharged on September 24, 1945.
While he attended one of the Marine radio schools, he met Joan Brown at a church function in Washington, D.C. They got engaged in 1944 and married on July 13, 1946. Over the next 20 years they were blessed with 9 children.
In 1945 he went back to work at KXYZ. Then he worked for Electro Mechanical Development Company (EMDeCo). In 1958 he started employment at Texas Instruments (TI) in Houston, and later in Austin. In 1985 he went to work at Tellabs and later became a consultant for C & H Technologies, Inc., both in Round Rock, Texas. Although he was considered a quiet man, he built many life-long friendships with coworkers.
As a child he began attending Heights Presbyterian and accepted Christ at the age of five. In 1960 the family moved to Bellaire, Texas, and began attending St. Thomas Episcopal Church and School in Houston. After later moving to Austin, they started attending St. Augustine's Orthodox Church. The bishop of the church, Thomas Logue, became a life-long friend of Shannon and the family.
Shannon is survived by his wife, Joan Brown Young; his sons and their spouses: Shannon Jr. and Patrice Young, Steve Young, Phil and Linda Young, Gary and Paty Young, Tom Young, and Larry Young and Amy Hitt; his daughters and their spouses: Robin and Jim Goza, Carol Young Moreno, and Cherie Young and Gene Delp; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and foster grandchildren.
