Lorene Kohut Obituary

Lorene Kohut
1929-2017
Lorene Kohut –Longtime Owner of The Little Gallery and Rock Shop and well known self-taught artist on the East Coast passed away at Seton Medical Center in Austin, TX on March 17, 2017. Born in Houston Texas on November 16, 1929 she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Alma Severance. Lorene joined the army right after high school and was honored, after only seven weeks of enlistment, to march in the inaugural parade for President Truman. She met and married M. Sgt. Mike Kohut in 1950.They spent time in Okinawa, the Phillipines and West Point New York. During this time Lorene painted and exhibited her artwork in various shows before finally settling down in Delaware. Lorene continued to paint and exhibit her artwork extensively in the East in several fine art museums and galleries and participated in One Man Shows. She belonged to several Art Associations, won numerous awards and was the recipient of three gold medals. Her paintings, often referred to as art poetry, hang in many private collections as well as public ones. Lorene eventually relocated back to her home state; first to La Grange, where she opened an art gallery, and then to Smithville. It was here that she started selling not only her art work but various types of rocks. Lorene's shop was well known for having an eclectic selection of merchandise that was reasonably priced. Not only did people love to spend time perusing through the rock shop, they also enjoyed in engaging in conversation with Lorene. And she always made sure everyone left the shop with a happy stone. She will be sorely missed by her following of loyal customers and numerous friends she made through her business. Lorene was preceded in death by her former husband, Mike Kohut and two brothers, Patrick and Tommy Severance. She is survived by one sister Bambi Byrd of Jacksonville, FL., her son Michael Kohut and his wife Jackie of Greenwood, DE, her daughter Karen Kohut of Milford, DE and her daughter Michelle Lynch and her husband Brian, of Bridgeville, DE, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Per Lorene's wishes, a service will not be held. In remembrance, donations can be made to pecancreekanimalrescue.org.

While I never met Lorene, I have enjoyed a print of "Misty Woodland" hanging in my office for the better part of 5 decades. Having grown up in lower Delaware, it reminded me of my walks in the woods near our home in Rehoboth Beach. I wish I could have met her and chatted about this painting but my appreciation of her art lives on in her memory.

My younger sister and I both remember Lorene (addressed by us as Mrs. Kohut) as we lived in Okinawa for three years in the late fifties. Our dad was in the Air Force and stationed in Okinawa. We became friends of the Kohut family and remember admiring Lorene's beautiful paintings of the ocean, waves and sky. Since we were surrounded by oceans, she had the ideal backdrop for her wonderful artwork.

Ms. Lorene was so wonderful and I would stop by her shop and stay for hours when I drove from Houston to Austin. She taught me so much about mineralogy and she brought so much light to my family and I when we came in. She's sorely missed.

Lorene was a very dear friend, and a reluctant mentor of mine. I will forever cherish our long conversations. Our collection of crystals built over the years will be a forever reminder of such a grand, kind and wise women!

I have so many beautiful memories of Lorene over all these years. It was always such a pleasure to go see her, visit and shop. I loved our conversations.

After the 2011 Wildfire, Lorene gave me a beautiful amethyst wedge as a housewarming gift for the apartment I ended up in. Since then, I built my crystal collection back up a bit.

Nothing can replce the joy Lorene brought to this world. She will live on in my heart forever.

Love and Blessings,

Our condolences to Lorene's family and friends. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
We loved her and were very blessed to have a friend like her. We will always remember her kindness, generosity , passion for art, crystals and minerals, love for pets, plants and enthusiasm for life. She was our dear friend and we are very saddened by her passing. For us, Lorene will live on in our hearts, memories and in the spark of energy from every crystal and mineral in our collection that we acquired from her shop.
Rest in peace dear Lorene. We are so honored to have known you.

I met Lorene only once or twice but my husband became good friends with her when he was driving back and forth regularly from Austin to Port Arthur to care for family from 1997 to 2002.Visiting Lorene always lifted his spirits and he came home with LOTS of treasure over the years. Grace, love and peace be to all.
