Brandt, Gilbert F.

Gilbert F. Brandt, age 98, a Manitowoc resident, went home to the Lord on Friday, December 28, 2012 at Harmony West of Manitowoc.

He was born on June 25, 1914 in Manitowoc, son of the late Otto and Irma (Ruthmansdorfer) Brandt. Gil was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1932. Following graduation he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Gil then joined the U. S. Army and attained the rank of Staff Sgt. He served in the European Theater during WWII and was a Purple Heart recipient. On November 14, 1942 he married Jean Arnold in Gilroy, CA. She preceded him in death on January 11, 1991. Gil was employed as a Postal Clerk with the United States Postal Service for 32 years retiring in 1977. He loved gardening and had many raspberries planted in the yard. Gil was also interested in photography and built his own dark room as well as some of his equipment. Woodworking was also a hobby of Gil's. Gil was an active volunteer at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center retiring from the mail room in May of 2012. He was also a member of Friends of the Library, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Drews Bleser Post #88.

Survivors include one daughter: Beverly Brandt, Manitowoc; his 'second daughter':Josie Block, Manitowoc; one brother and two sisters-in-law: Kenneth and Karyl Brandt, Jackson, OH, Carol Brandt, Manitowoc; one sister: Marian Diedrich, Manitowoc and a dear friend Sr. Rose. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was further preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law: Norman and Dorothy Brandt and George Brandt; and one sister and brother-in-law: Ethel and Cliff Spevacek.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen, with entombment to follow at Calvary Mausoleum, military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Drews Bleser Post #88.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc.
