Fr. Fred Radtke, O.F.M.

Manitowoc - Fr. Fred Radtke, O.F.M., a Franciscan friar of the Sacred Heart Province, died on Monday morning, November 5, 2018, at St. Mary's Home at the Felician Village in Manitowoc, WI, at the age of 80. Fred Radtke was born on July 3, 1938, in Chicago, IL, to Melvin F. Radtke, Sr., and Jesse L. (Gibler) Radtke. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Thorp, WI. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Hedwig Parish in Thorp. Fred was received into the Franciscan community as a novice on June 21, 1960, and professed solemn vows on June 22, 1964. He was ordained a priest on December 16, 1967, in Westmont, IL, by Bishop Henry Pinger, O.F.M.

Fr. Fred began his priestly ministry as a missionary in Brazil for nine years and continued his missionary zeal in Zaire, Africa for five years. He also served as Spiritual Director at Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Quincy, IL; Director of Formation at St. Joseph's in Chicago; Confessor and Director of Worship at St. Peter's Church in Chicago; Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Joliet, IL; Parochial Vicar of St. Benedict the Black Parish in East St. Louis, IL, Holy Trinity Parish in Fairview, IL, and St. Stephen's Parish in Caseyville, IL. Due to failing health, he came to Blessed Giles Friary in Manitowoc, WI, in July of 2018.

Fr. Fred was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother: Melvin F. Radtke, Jr., of Lake Wales, FL; several cousins: Jackie Velez, Robert Gibler, Federico Jimenez, Diana Gibbler Jimenez, Victor Eizenga, Norman Rogers, Barbara Peckstein, and Marleine Schildt; life-long friend: Frank Galiger, of Porterfield, WI; and many friends from the various parishes he served. He is also survived by his Franciscan family.

The friars of Blessed Giles would like to express their appreciation to the nurses and staff at St. Mary's Home at the Felician Village and Holy Family Memorial Hospice for the care they gave to Fr. Fred in the last weeks of his life. A special thank you to Dr. Baatz, his oncologist, and her staff.

Family, friars, and friends will gather at the Blessed Angela Chapel at Felician Village (1635 South 21st Street) on Friday, November 9, 2018, with a visitation at 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral liturgy at 11:00 a.m., with burial at Calvary Cemetery in Manitowoc, WI.
