Schmalz, Herbert B.

Herbert B. Schmalz, age 91, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center.

Herb was born on January 5, 1922 in Allenton to the late Benno and Olga Thierfelder Schmalz. After attending grade school in a one room schoolhouse is Allenton, Herb attended West Bend High School and graduated with the class of 1943. He then went on to complete his education by obtaining his Bachelors Degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison. On June 16, 1945, Herb married Dorothy Rinas in Milwaukee. Dorothy preceded him in death on May 10, 2013. Herb was employed with Arthur Andersen's Milwaukee office from 1943 until 1948. After becoming certified as a Certified Public Accountant in 1948, he established his C.P.A. practice in Manitowoc that fall. In 1954, Herb formed a partnership, Schmalz and Stephani C.P.A.s, with his long-time friend, Arnold G. Stephani. In 1979, they merged their firm with Hawkins, Ash, Baptie & Company, where Herb continued as a consultant. He then joined The Cawley Company as controller and Treasurer until his retirement in 2005. Herb also assisted at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home for many years. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County Historical Society, Lakeshore Humane Society, Wisconsin Institute of C.P.A.s, American Institute of C.P.A.s, Mental Health Association of Manitowoc, life member of the Manitowoc noon Optimist Club, board of directors and past president of the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, and board of directors and past president of Family Service Association. Above all, Herb loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his wonderful family. He also enjoyed music, gardening, taking care of their home, reading, walking, and traveling.

He was the loving father of Peter (Nancy) Schmalz, Oshkosh; and Paul (Ramona) Schmalz, Whitefish Bay; grandfather of Brian (Emily), Heidi, Daniel and Eric; great grandfather of Greta, Deanna, and Ada.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Rev. Zachary DeArmond will officiate with burial to take place at Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Following the funeral service, a luncheon will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home.
