Mark Emerson Obituary

Mark Donald Emerson
3-27-1962 - 4-9-2013
Mark Donald Emerson was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on March 27, 1962. He attended schools in Salem, Oregon, and Nampa, Idaho. He graduated cum laude from Nampa High School. He attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, receiving a B.A. degree in psychology and history.
In 1997 Mark graduated from Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas, with a Masters' Degree in Theology. He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Littleton, Colorado, and Aurora Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado.
Mark earned an M.A. degree from the University of Northern Alabama and a Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. He taught in the Departments of Business Administration at George Fox University/Boise and at Northwest Nazarene University.
Mark's major interests in high school and college were football, flute and band, and drama. He was a voracious reader and eagerly engaged in discussing ideas and current events. He enjoyed swimming, and earned college money as a summer life guard at church camp.
Mark loved to teach, whether in the classroom, in Sunday School, or explaining things in casual conversation. As a college professor he used humor to engage his students as he clarified abstract ideas and concepts. As a pastor, preacher, and Bible teacher, he made biographies and history and truth become real and applicable to twenty-first century living. His counsel was wise and pertinent.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Emerson, M.D., his grandparents Donald and Florence Emerson, and the Rev. Herbert and Beulah Cederberg. He is survived by his wife Kimberly and their daughters Kristen and Jessica, his mother Marilyn Emerson, his brothers John Emerson and Paul Emerson, his uncle Herbert Cederberg (Alice), and his father-in-law Ken Beynon (Kathleen).
A memorial service will be held at College Church of the Nazarene in Nampa on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cathedral Pines Baptist Camp, HC 64, Box 8296, Ketchum, ID 83340, or to the church of your choice. Services under the care of Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel, Nampa 466-3545.

I just heard about Mark's passing and am still processing the shock of it. I am so sorry to hear of his loss and hope that he is at peace with his Father in Heaven. I was one of his students at GFU and kept up a friendship with him. I missed being able to share coffee with him after he returned from Europe and I am so sorry now that I was not able to make that work. Sincere condolences to Mark's family.

Kim, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Many of my best youth group memories are from the time you served at FBC Olathe. Mark was a force to be reckoned with and will be missed. Much love to all.

There are no words to express our sadness and the sense of loss. Mark was a S.S. teacher, bar none, and opened up the scripture in new and refreshing ways. My Bible is full of penciled-in notes that will always remind me of God's use of a Godly man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Kim.

Mark was indeed a godly man, gifted with humor, grace, and unfailing faith. He has been a "treasure" to all of us who knew him. I can imagine him having some lively discussions in Heaven, riding a mountain bike all over the place, and loving being with Jesus! For his family, I will continue praying for you. May you find some comfort in your memories of Mark and the reassurance of seeing him again.

Mark and Kim led our youth group at 1st Baptist Church in Olathe, KS, many years ago when I was in junior high school. My prayers are with Kim and their daughters. Mark left a big imprint on the hearts and souls of so many of us under his leadership at 1st Baptist - more so than he ever knew. Thinking back brings to mind so many good memories from that time. May The Lord bless, protect and provide for Kim and family in and through this time.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Mark was in my 5th grade class. I lost track of him until we met Dr. Emerson 15 years ago when our son was born. I was so happy to hear he was a pastor and had a life that impacted others for the Lord. He is only gone from your sight. He has now heard, "Here he comes!" and I'm sure heaven is rejoicing.

One of the things that helped me in loosing my late Joyce is that I envisioned her as Chair of Heaven's Entertainment and Reception Committee. I know she'll put a special 'spin' on Mark's reception. We have a hard time imagining how wonderful Heaven really is because it surpasses anything we could even imagine from our earthly position. Give that, I KNOW Mark is so happy there and it does put an end to the discomforts of this earth.

Kim ... Looking forward to the day the 4 of us can play that game of pinochle in Heaven ... together!

Mark showed how Christians can have fun in everyday life. I appreciated his genuine concern for the spiritual well-being of students. He was a great support to my family when I came to NNU as a new faculty.

I began my MBA education with a course from Dr. Emerson, and consider it a privilege to have learned from such a great man. My heart hurts for the Emerson family. May you find peace in knowing he is safely home.
