Lawrence Higgs Obituary

Lawrence (Larry) Higgs, 84, of Nampa, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in a Nampa care facility. No services well be held per his request. Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa.
I thank my wife for allowing me to write my own obituary.
I was born in Salt Lake City, Jan. 21, 1923, the youngest of eight children to Reece and Jesse Higgs. Raised by aunts and older sisters, I graduated from West High School. I earned letters in football, basketball, baseball and tennis. I was awarded the Homer Paul Christiansen Medal for outstanding Student-Athlete.
World War II broke out while attending Idaho State and I enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor. The next 44 months were good and bad. I spent 37 of those months on Combat Sea Duty. Saw lots of the world, met many new people, and treasured all of it.
I married my only wife on May 6, 1943, in Roanoke, Va., while running convoys. When I finished my education after War II, we came home to Idaho as fast as possible. I worked first for Idaho Power Co. and then for Mountain Bell. I retired from Mtn. Bell after 33 years, mostly here in Nampa. Thinking back, I can only say that we made a good choice in raising our family here in Nampa.
I have coached Little League football, basketball, baseball, Legion baseball and loved every minute of it.
I have worked on many projects here in Nampa. Among them are the original Little League diamonds in Nampa; Lakeview and Lincoln swimming pools; the old Community Center; West Park and the biggest of all, Centennial Golf Course.
I belonged to the Nampa Exchange Club and worked the stands at the Rodeo Grounds for 25 years. I was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds by Exchange Club.
I served six years on the Nampa District School Board.
I am survived by my wife Margene of 64 years; three sons: Gregg of Richland, Ore., his daughter Stacy Lyn and family of WA; David of Nampa, his daughter Patrece Mansisidor (David) and son Ryan and daughter Kiera of Seattle, WA; David's wife Carrie and their children Katelyn (Don) Peterson and Kevin; son Mark (Dianna) and her son Brian of Moses Lake, WA and one sister, Evelyn Wilding of Salt Lake City, Utah.
I like all kids, but I love my own and my grandchildren most of all.
I have been blessed to live my life in this place, in this time, with my family and my friends. I have no regrets.

Dear Dave, Mark, and Margene,
I'd like to express my heartfelt sympathy to your family. My memory of Larry is as a baseball coach during American Legion Baseball, and he was a great one at that. May your family be comforted during this time of great loss.

Dear Margene, David & Carrie, and family,

How very honored I am to have known and been able to render service to Larry over the years. He always was so pleasant, and happy, even when his health was failing here at the last. His last visit was just a few weeks ago. He knew he didn't have long, but felt good with his life, and so proud of his family. He was so thankful to you, Margene, for all your help. His own obituary helped me understand him even more, and he is truly one of the great guys of this world, who went about making others happy thru his charity, leaving his community better forever. Thank you, Larry.

We,as a staff, at my office will definitely remember his impact on our lives. May God bless and keep you all.

Respectfully,
Dr. Russell C. Pool, and Staff

David, Mark and Higgs Family:
My sympaththy is extended to you in the loss of your dad. I have many fond memories of playing ball many summers with your dad being very involved. Coaching, organizing or just plain being there for us kids. I lost my dad recently as well so I can relate to your current experience. May the Lord bless and keep you and surround you with His comforting and loving arms.

Gregg, Margene and Falilies
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you at this very difficult time. Larry was one of my first customers, the day I started working for Idaho First National Bank. He was always so cheerful, kind and caring, a true pleasure to know. It's people like Larry that has kept me in the banking industry for 30+ years. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow. He will be dearly missed by many.

Margene: We know that Larry is happy in his Father's house, where
God shall wipe away all tears from
his eyes, and there shall be no more
death and no more pain, for the former things are passed away. If we can help in any way call us.

I think back to many days with Larry at ballgames at Lincoln Park or Rodeo Park. Words of encouragement before duck hunting trips and many other fond memories. My best wishes. Hugh Cooke

Gregg and the rest of the Higgs Family;
I want to express my deepest sympathy for the loss of your father. I, too, recently lost my father (Karl) and I know what you are all going through at this difficult time.
I still remember the fond times I had during the time your Dad coached me in little league baseball and for all of the encouragement he provided to me and many others. He will be missed by many.
May the Lord guide you and comfort you.
A friend,
Mike Schaefer
