Alvin James Roberson

Alvin James Roberson, age 94, died at his home in Wilder, ID on Nov. 30, 2016. The son of Alfred Willis (AW) and Mary Viola Moore Roberson, Alvin was born Mar. 13, 1922 in McAlester, OK. He grew up with two sisters and three brothers in Oklahoma and California. He graduated from Shafter High School and attended Cal Poly University on an agricultural scholarship. He was drafted in 1944 and served as a corporal in the US Army military police, First Army in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. He was honorably discharged in December 1945 and returned home to Wilder, ID where he farmed with his parents in Arena Valley. He taught vocational agriculture to returning veterans under the GI bill for four years through the Parma School District. He was a founding member and builder of the Church of Christ meeting house in Parma where he served many years as song leader and Bible class teacher.
Alvin married Alice Nelson July 15, 1950 and they bought a farm in Arena Valley. Three children were born - Jay, Tina and Lee. Alvin milked cows, raised registered Berkshire hogs and bought another 70 acres while renting his father's farm in 1960. He built their home from excavating the basement, through framing, wiring, plumbing, brick-laying and finishing in one year while farming. He also served as 4-H club leader and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. Each year he enjoyed sharing a large garden including watermelon and cantaloupe with others.
Alvin is survived by his wife of 66 years - Alice, son Jay (Rosie) of Austin, TX, daughter Tina (Steve) Towell of Camas, WA and daughter-in-law Carolyn of Salmon, ID and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Lee, and his granddaughter Alicia. Surviving siblings include Calvin of Hermiston, OR; Truman of Spokane, WA; Orval of McCall, ID and sister Ethae Mae Fenton, CA. Memorial gifts sent to Manuelito Navajo Children's Home, PO Box 58, Gallup, NM 87395 would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 at 10:30am at the Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 S. Kimball Ave., Caldwell, ID. Condolences may be shared at
