Billy D. Cunnington
January 1, 1929 - December 16, 2015
Billy D. Cunnington, Sergeant Major Retired, passed away on December 16, 2015 at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Nampa, ID. He was born to Fred W. and Elsie Wheeler Cunnington on January 1, 1929 in Hailey Idaho and raised in Hagerman, ID.
Billy served with the Idaho Army National Guard for 42 years. He joined the military at 18 and retired as a Sergeant Major at age 60.
Billy loved life and lived as fully as he could each day, riding into work from the home in Weiser on his Indian motorcycle as often as possible. He dearly loved their home on the banks of the Weiser River and would be found water-skiing from Weiser to Farewell Bend. He won numerous awards in national marksmanship competitions for pistol shooting and discovered music - playing his violin at the Old Time Fiddlers Gathering in Weiser. As time went on, he eventually made his own instruments much to everyone's amazement. Joining his friends in a jam session in Nashville, TN seemed to be second nature to Billy. Family and friends from across the nation would camp at their home in Weiser to enjoy the endless hospitality filled with food, music and the river. Billy also loved the game of golf much to the agony of his two sons, as he insisted they could always play the shot better. Upon his retirement, winters were spent in Yuma, Arizona where parades would be entered with the latest and greatest VW dune buggy, adorned with lighting.
He married Evelyn Rogers in Boise, ID on June 30, 1951. They have two sons: Billy David Cunnington (Julie Ocamica) and Leonard E. Cunnington (Joyce Adams). They thoroughly enjoy their five grandchildren: Brenda Stark (Casey Kenison), Bradley T. Cunnington (Nicole Meginnis), Jack T. Cunnington (Sara Logan), Andrew J. Cunnington and Jennifer K. Cunnington (Cody Giovanetti). They have four great-grandchildren: Heyden and Emmie Kenison, Riggins Cunnington and Walker Giovanetti as well as four step-grandchildren: Jace and Tyler Logan, Chade Meginnis and Traxton Jusdtesen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers Gay W. Cunnington, died 1943, and Merle H. Cunnington, died 2013.)
