Dewey Kawahara
December 11, 1952 - March 24, 2017
Dewey Kawahara, 64 of Boise, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, March 24, 2017 of complications due to COPD.
Dewey was born in Nampa, Idaho, on December 11, 1952 to Harry and Teri Kawahara. Along with his five sisters and one brother, the siblings tended to the family farm. At an early age he learned the value of hard work and the love and commitment of family. In 1971, he graduated from Vallivue High School, shortly after he attended Boise State University, and was drafted into the Army in 1973. He served in Washington, DC and later relocated to California where he set up permanent residence. Dewey worked for UPS for 19 years before attending Cosmetology School. At school, he met Karen Gusley and they married in 1983. He was a hair dresser for prestigious hair salons such as Carlton and the famous Rudy's Barbershop. In 2015, Dewey relocated to Boise, Idaho to be closer to his family and grandchildren.
Dewey was extremely creative and passionate about his work and over the years kept a loyal clientele. He also mentored rising stylists on the art of color, cutting, and styling; his keen eye for fashion kept him on the cutting edge of his craft.
Dewey was an original thinker with his own sensibility and unique way of looking at the world. He was an artistic person with a deep love for fashion, music, literature, and cinema. Dewey had an offbeat sense of humor that kept his family and friends on their toes. He had a deep affinity for the open road and great desire to travel the world.
Dewey leaves behind three children, Scott (Virginia) Kennison, Alexis Kawahara and Dylan (Alex) Kawahara; grandchildren, Candace, Sadie, Caden and Josie. He is also survived by his parents, Harry and Teri Kawahara; siblings, Chris Chester, Patti Harris, Wanda (Randy) MartInat, Amy (Ike) Rhoads, Cindee (Bob) Yamamoto and Scott (Danielle) Kawahara; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Dewey will be deeply missed by his coworkers and family at Goldy's.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 30th at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 S. Kimball Ave, Caldwell, with a reception to follow at Orphan Annie's Bar & Grill, across from Dakan Chapel. A private inurnment will be held at Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery at a later date.
