Donald (Don) Lee Spurling
September 20, 1943 - November 20, 2016
Donald (Don) Lee Spurling, 73, died on November 20, 2016 from a rare and very aggressive thyroid cancer. He was born September 20, 1943 to William Elvin and Anna Lorena Spurling in Moberly, Missouri. In 1945 the family moved to Idaho. He married Becky Warden in June of 1970. Their son, Paul, was born in 1975.
Don grew up on his family's farm in Melba. This contributed to his strong work ethic and perseverance as well as a lifelong love for growing both food and flowers. He grew a very large vegetable garden every year, as well as caring for his vineyard, orchard, and hundreds of flowering bulbs. Many friends benefited from the produce, wine and bouquets Don and Becky shared.
Don was an extraordinarily intelligent man who loved reading, learning and conversing about a wide range of subjects including medical ethics and biblical history. His knowledge of the Bible and his ability to explain scriptural topics was greatly appreciated. He had a sincere personal interest in those he spoke with.
Don was a highly respected member of the Caldwell South Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and was instrumental in helping to establish the first of many Spanish congregations now in the valley. He also was a key member in the Hospital Liaison Committee for Jehovah's Witnesses for 28 years. He was able to help and comfort so many with their questions and concerns while they were in the hospital. Additionally, he had a position on the medical ethics committee at two local hospitals, contributing to the shared understanding by medical professionals of treatment options and considerations for all patients.
Don is survived by his wife Becky, his son Paul and his daughter-in-law Jenifer, his brothers Larry (Dorothy) Spurling and David (Maggie) Spurling, and his sister June (Ed) Parker. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Julie (West) Archer, whom he helped raise, because Becky and Julie's mother died when Julie was only 11 years old. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers-in-law Tim (Karen) Warden and Terry (Kellie) Warden and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Elvin and Anna Spurling.
Jim Zamara will officiate at Don's memorial service. It will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 in the Caldwell High School auditorium, at 3401 S. Indiana Ave. There will be a covered dish gathering following the service at the high school. Please note: No foods containing peanuts are allowed, due to school policy.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the worldwide work of Jehovah's Witnesses at jw.org, or to the American Thyroid Association's research at www.thyroid.org/donate. Please go to www.dakanfuneralchapel.com to read more about Don and to share your condolences and memories.
