Dorothy E York
March 13, 1918 - November 13, 2015
Dorothy Evelyn York passed away peacefully on November 13, 2015 at Grace Assisted Living in Boise. She was born March 13, 1918 in Caldwell, Idaho to Edwin and Florence Smith. Graduating from Nampa High School she went on to attend Idaho State University in Pocatello. She returned to Boise and was working at the Idaho State Department of Vocational Rehabilitation when she met and married Charles C. York, an airman stationed at Gowen Field, in July of 1943.
From the war years through Charlie's retirement from the Air Force in 1963, they lived in the United States and abroad calling Panama, France, Florida, Alabama and California their home. Upon Charlie's retirement they returned to Idaho, living in Boise and then in Nampa in the Silvercrest Estates community, where they made several long lasting friends. Upon Charlie's passing in 2001, Dorothy continued to live in their Nampa home where she enjoyed living an independent lifestyle. She was an avid bridge player, loved to drive her car, and visit with friends sharing stories of their past travels and life. In 2014 she sold their Nampa home, and with the help of their long time friend Joe Whilden and his family, moved back to Boise.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, her brother Bruce, and a son. She is survived by her two daughters, Marlene Southard of Boise and Claudia York, along with three grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of Grace Assisted Living at Englefield Green in Boise for the loving care and attention they gave to Dorothy, especially during her final weeks.
Following Dorothy's wishes, only private family services will be held, and her remains will be placed beside her husband in a columbarium niche at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. The family requests that any memorial gifts be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project at
