April 4, 1931 - Nov. 27, 2016
Dorthy Estella Shaner Lake Breshears, 85, of Emmett, passed away on November 27, 2016 in a Boise hospital. She was born April 5, 1931 to Howard Poe Shaner and Mamie Pearl Tuttle in Ainsworth, Nebraska. She was the eighth of eleven children. She moved with her family to Idaho when she was nine and they settled in the Parma area. Because of the impacts of the Great Depression, she worked in the fields as a child alongside her family to help support all the mouths that needed to be fed. She often retold those memories in love and reverence for her parents and siblings, all for whom she loved deeply.
Dorthy graduated from Parma High School in 1950 and went to work at Malheur Memorial Hospital, Nyssa, as a nurse's aide. She met Wayne George Lake at a New Year's Eve dance at Boulevard Grange in Ontario, Oregon in 1950. She would tell her children later that it was love at first sight, even though she accidentally stood him up on their first date. She worked her first night shift the evening prior and was so tired she slept soundly through to the next day. It must have been love because they were married April 3, 1951 and made their first home in New Plymouth, Idaho. They had three children, Larry Wayne, 1952; Ramona Marie, 1954; and Diana Lynne, 1963. Wayne and Dorthy taught their children the meaning of love and respect for each other and family; taught them how to work and be independent; and encouraged them to live according to the golden rule.
In 1970, Dorthy enrolled in the LPN program that was offered through Walter Knox Memorial Hospital, Emmett, and taught by Betty Gull, R.N. Surviving appendix cancer and the death of her beloved husband, she completed the program in 1971. She worked as a nurse at Walter Knox until she retired in 1985. Dorthy enjoyed the people she worked with and all those she cared for. She believed in treating people with love and giving them the dignity they deserved.
Dorthy married Wayne Melvin Breshears on August 25, 1972. They were active members of the LDS church until health issues prevented them from attending. Dorthy took her church duties seriously and always did her best to do the Lord's work in everything she did. She had a strong testimony and did her best to live a worthy life. Dorthy and Wayne also enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Dorthy was a family historian and loved doing genealogy. She busied herself with gathering stories, letters, and photographs so that her children would know where they came from. This legacy she leaves behind was her life's passion. Dorthy was an avid crafter, oil painter, and gardener. When you saw a twinkle in her eye, you knew she was up to something and laughter was soon to follow. She loved being outdoors and spending time in nature because it was where she always said she could feel the presence of those who had passed before her. Dorthy spent her life loving and serving others and she will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her in return.
Dorthy was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; four brothers: Kenneth, Harold, Donald, and Glenn Shaner; five sisters: Evelyn Ensley, Lois Miller, Irene Shaner, Betty Miller, and Lila Ferreyra; two stepsons: David and Dana Breshears; and a grandson, Toby Hunt. She is survived by sister Patricia Taylor, her children: Larry (Cindy) Lake, Ramona (Ken) Hunt, and Diana (Kevin) Wright; her step-children: Kathy (Larry) Morriss, Christy (Andy) Little, Wayne (Jeri) Breshears, and Wynne (Cindy) Breshears; her grandchildren: Cynthia (Steve) Fuson, Bob Cain, Calvin Hussman, Hilary (John) Kyle, Heather Hunt, Trevor Hunt, Jarod Hunt, Brian (Alicia) Hunt, Shawn (Nacassia) Hunt, Aubrey (Chris) Haring, Adam (Tracy) Wright, Nick Wright, Jason Wright, Tracey Morriss, Colleen Wittler, Brad (Rose) Morriss, Sara (Jon) Foote, Bethany (Matt) Yule, Megan (Eric) Milliron, Michael (Becky) Breshears, Melissa (Kevin) Crumley, Matthew and Kristen Breshears, Zack (Lindsey) Breshears, Jesse Breshears, Ashlie (Cody) Glass, Corrie and Austin Breshears, Dalton and Caitlynn Long, Lauren Long, and numerous great-grandchildren.
