Evelyn Mae Hazen
May 20, 1924 - May 27, 2016
Evelyn Mae Hazen, 92, of Nampa, Idaho passed away at a local hospital on May 27, 2016; exactly 22 years to the day after her husband Kenneth L. Hazen. She was born May 20, 1924 in Knox County, Nebraska. Being the last baby delivered by Dr. William F. Hazen. She was the oldest child of George and Christina Bertschinger. The siblings were Dale Bertschinger, Lorraine Emory, Margaret Heckathorn and Lois Morgan. Lois of Arizona City, Arizona is her sole remaining sister. Grade school was in a rural one-room schoolhouse, followed by high school in Creighton, Nebraska while living with her grandparents.
Following graduation from teachers college, she moved to Marsing, Idaho and lived with her uncle and aunt, George and Elsie Christiansen. She taught school at Edison School on Sunny Slope for several years. It was at this time she met Kenneth Hazen (Elsie's brother). They were married in 1944 in New Orleans and they lived in Oklahoma City until he was deployed to the Philippines and then Korea. During this time she moved back with her parents. Roberta was born in Plainview, Nebraska that winter. Ken and Evelyn were married for nearly 50 years.
Following the war, they moved back to Marsing where Richard and Judy were born. Following a year in Kansas City, where Ken attended watch making school, they returned to Idaho and settled in Nampa where they made their home for the duration. Suzanne was born in 1951. Evelyn is survived by her four children: Roberta and Ron McFadden of Boise, Richard and Beth Hazen of Anchorage, AK, Judy and Alan Christopherson of Star, and Suzanne and Dan Swindell of Nampa. Evelyn is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 1 grandchild, Dawn Michelle McFadden.
Evelyn attended Nampa Business College and graduated in 1958; where upon she taught there for several years before going to work for Dr. Joseph Saltzer whom she worked for until her retirement. Thereafter Ken and Evelyn enjoyed RVing, spending most winters in southern Arizona. Attending various sporting events, especially those of grand and great grandchildren was always of high importance.
She was very active in the Nampa Civic Center for many years, volunteered with Idaho Center, the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, was active in the local Lady Elks, and was an avid supporter of BSU football. She had her favorite NFL and MLB teams and PGA players.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 2, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 8 S. Midland Blvd., Nampa. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell.
