Gary Van Lybyer
December 30, 1940 - March 21, 2015
Gary Van Lybyer went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 21, 2015 in Nampa, Idaho, after battling cancer. Van was born on December 30, 1940, to C. Jake and Cleeta (Dobbs) Lybyer in Yakima, Washington. He grew up on a farm in Grandview. He played fullback for the football team, was a sprinter for the track team in high school and attended Northwest Nazarene College.
Van married Carol Haines in 1962 and they were inseparable for 52 years. Their children are Randy Lybyer of Lewiston and Kim Million of Caldwell. They started their life together in Seattle. Van worked for Washington Water Power (Avista) for 34 years, living in Clarkston, Orofino, Pullman and Moscow, retiring in 1998. They moved to Caldwell in 2000.
Van loved God and was very involved in ministry at the Church of the Nazarene in every community he and his family lived. He loved the music of the church and sang tenor in many groups. He served on the church board and as treasurer for many years. Van also served in youth ministry for several years. He faithfully attended "whenever the church doors were open".
Van's greatest passion was the people in his life. He loved his family and the friends he made at school, church and work. He maintained several lifelong friendships in each of the communities he lived. He enjoyed being a part of a large extended family network that included many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Van liked playing golf, but loved it when he played well. In retirement Van and Carol were avid RVers, often dreaming of being full-timers in a comfortable motor home. The Oregon Coast was the favored destination. They enjoyed several cruises with many friends. Van also developed an interest in bird watching and loved farm tractors since his youth. He also enjoyed attending area track and field events.
Van is survived by his wife, Carol; his son, Randy and Debra Lybyer; his daughter, Kim and Randy Million; six grandchildren - Spencer Lybyer, Miranda Lybyer, Jenna Million, Parker Million, Eli Million, Christian Lybyer; and his sister, Kaye Vining.
A memorial service will be held at the Karcher Church of the Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 2:00 PM. Condolences may be shared at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com
