Hisako "Sako" Yasuda
January 14, 1929 - May 18, 2015
Hisako "Sako" Yasuda of Caldwell, Idaho passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Sako was born in Portland, Oregon to Yuhei and Tomoyo Osumi Kido, immigrants from Fukuoka, Japan. She was the fourth of five children. Sako was an 8th grade student at Fairview Grade School in May 1942 when her family received the evacuation order for all persons of Japanese ancestry to be removed from the West Coast. Along with many other Japanese families, the Kidos worked for the Amalgamated Sugar Company in Nyssa, Oregon to assist with the wartime demand for sugar instead of relocating to an internment camp. Hisako graduated from Nyssa High School in 1946. She attended Eastern Oregon College of Education and graduated in May 1950. Her first job was with the Portland Public Schools as a first grade teacher.
Hisako married Paul "Pete" Yasuda on November 21, 1953 in Ontario, Oregon and together they had 5 children. They made their home on the Oregon Slope where they farmed until 1957 when they moved to Caldwell, Idaho. Following Pete's death in 1991, Sako renewed her teaching degree and taught the first grade at Van Buren Elementary School in Caldwell for 9 years. She retired from teaching in 1995.
Sako was an enthusiastic member of the JACL, ADK and the Deer Flat Church. She was known for her warm smile, genuine interest in others and culinary abilities. Her pies were legendary within her circle of family and friends.
Sako was preceded in death by her husband Pete and brothers Mas and Hiro. She is survived by her siblings Nori Kondo, Bob (Yae) Kido, and sister-in-law Emi Kido, her children Robert (Sally) Yasuda, Mardi (John Hine) Wilburn, David (Katy Shanafelt) Yasuda, Christi (Dan) Jackson, Mark (Cheri Ruch) Yasuda and her grandchildren Michael Yasuda, Andrew and Adrienne Wilburn, Lily Yasuda, Nicki, Paul, Becca and Joey Jackson.
