James Harold Smith
December 2, 1938 - March 1, 2015
James "Jim" Harold Smith, 76, of Caldwell, ID passed away in the home he built, on March 1st of a rare form of Parkinson's.
The gentle giant with the broad smile and heart of gold was born in Caldwell on Dec. 2, 1938 to Clinton and Agnes Smith.
He married June Anderson, the love of his life, after a four year stint in the Marine Corps. Soon after, Jim and June moved to California where he attended Northrup Institute of Technology. He graduated at the top of his class with an Airframe and Powerplant Associates Degree. Knowledge gained from this degree helped him throughout his life when he pursued other career paths as a finish carpenter, cabinet maker, remodel supervisor, and when he built his own home in Caldwell. He was a true craftsman and took pride in his work. In later years, he began the craft of woodturning, and his creations were truly works of art. He loved giving away his bowls, clocks, and pens and wanted them to be his legacy. It was his great sorrow that he could no longer create in his shop the last two years of his life.
Jim loved children and his son, grandson, neices and nephews were never out of reach of his gentle, teasing sense of humor. A close nephew even named him, "Funny Uncle Jim."
He loved his wife and son unconditionally, and from the day Ryan was born, he never stopped helping him, playing with him and supporting him.
Jim was a lover of animals, a fisherman, tinkerer, inventor, a man who could fix anything, a good neighbor, a selfless helper, and so much more.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Winifred Matteson, parents Clint and Agnes Smith, Uncles John, Frank, and Archie Matteson and sister-in-law Nel Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, June; son Ryan, daughter-in-law Yuki, and grandson Taiyo, of Orlando, FL.; brothers Dave of Carson City, NV., Jerry (wife Starla) of Gardnerville, NV., Tom (wife JoAnn) of Dayton, NV.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A reception will be held on Saturday March 7th at 3 p.m. at the home of Jim's Aunt, Bobbie Matteson: 15694 Moonstruck, Caldwell, ID 83607.
