Karen Ann Fleming
April 24, 1951 - August 6, 2015
Our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Karen Ann Fleming, 64, passed away at home on Thursday, August 6, 2015.
Karen was born April 24, 1951 in Nampa, ID to Gerald and Lorene Guentz. She arrived six weeks early, weighing 4.8 pounds, full of will and determination - defining attributes that served her well throughout life.
Karen's early years were spent helping on the family farm, topping corn with friends, participating in 4-H and attending Southside Blvd United Methodist Church. She graduated from Kuna High School in 1969 and then attended Treasure Valley Community College, where she met a certain guy from Vale, Oregon, named Bob, who liked country western dancing. Karen and Bob Fleming were married in 1971. Shortly afterwards, they moved to a farm southwest of Kuna where she lived the remainder of her life.
Karen's sons, Travis and Trent were born within the next few years and Karen became a "Super Mom," helping the boys with sports, school activities and 4-H projects. Karen loved the role of farm wife; helping Bob in the fields, gardening, cooking, canning, and baking amazing pies.
With that innate determination, Karen went back to school while working and raising her boys, and she graduated from Boise State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She began a teaching career with the Nampa School District in 1984 that would span 29 years. Karen was a dedicated and tireless teacher, staying late to lead a special reading program and insistently giving every student the extra help they needed to ensure their success. Snake River School honored her twice as Teacher of the Year.
Weekends and summers found Karen working at Greenhurst Nursery. She also co-managed with Bob the Fancy Pickins booth at the Kuna Farmers Market, selling her delicious homemade pies and fresh garden produce. She enjoyed lunches with teachers and friends, outings and fun with her "Ladies On The Loose" gang, family time at the cabin in Cascade, trips to Europe and, in 2013, a wonderful vacation to Maui with Bob.
Those who were lucky enough to know Karen knew she was the kindest, most selfless, generous and thoughtful person there could be. She was a friend to all. She always thought of everyone else first. She loved to shop and had a special knack of picking just the right gift, no occasion necessary, if she saw something she knew a friend or relative would like. During her illness with cancer she protected all of us, never complaining and always carrying on with dignity and fortitude. Her standard answer was always, "I'm fine."
Karen is survived by her husband of nearly 44 years, Bob Fleming of Kuna, sons Travis of Kuna and Trent of Nampa, her parents Gerald and Lorene Guentz of Nampa, sisters Kristin Sample of Nampa and Janet (Gary) Benoit of Boise; sister-in-laws Linda (Nick) Crannell and Debbie (Doug) Wiggins of Oregon and nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her father and mother-in law, Paul and Wilma Fleming.
The family would like to thank the many friends who brought so much joy to Karen's life and helped her in so many ways. A special thanks to St. Luke's, Dr. Ben Bridges, Dr. Tonya Kuhn, Alice and the wonderful staff at MISTI, Heart n' Home Hospice and especially Brenda and Melissa Duschka.
