Leola May Spelman
May 17, 1922 - April 28, 2017
Leola May Spelman was born May 17, 1922 in Alton, Missouri to Grover and Effie (Davis) Lance. Leola joined her four brothers. Her baby brother, Olen came along to complete the family. A sister, Gaylene was born but only lived a few days.
Leola was so proud of her Missouri roots. When going back to visit family she loved seeing the red birds and the big large oak trees, the fire bugs and the dog wood in bloom in the spring. She especially loved her brother Olen's cabin in Alton. She always felt she had come home.
Leola spent her childhood years in Alton with her family. They lived on the family farm where everybody helped. Leola spent much of her time with her mom in the house where she learned to cook and sew. As she got older she spent a few summers in Idaho Falls babysitting for her brother Noel's children. She would make the trip by herself on the bus.
Leola graduated from Alton High School in 1941. After high school she went to St. Louis and worked for 2 different defense plants during the war. While she was in St. Louis a local superintendent approached her parents and asked if Leola would be interested in teaching. Leola accepted and moved again. She taught school for one year before moving home to Alton.
Between 1941 and 1942 Leola met the love of her life, Monty Spelman. Leola and Monty rented rooms in the same boarding house. They also discovered that Monty had been good friends with Leola's brothers but he never knew they had a sister. When Monty went into the service the woman that owned the boarding house slipped his address into Leola's suitcase. They corresponded for a couple years and saw each other when Monty was home on leave.
Monty and Leola married July 26, 1945 in East St Louis, Illinois. Soon after the couple married Monty got a job in Idaho Falls at Reed's Dairy. He got the job because of Leola's brother Noel. They were in Idaho Falls for only a short time before Monty got a job at C.B. Hill's place in Adrian, OR. While living there the first of their two sons, Monty "Bruce" Spelman was born in 1947. After a few years they moved to the Peterson place where their second son, Curtis was born. The family was complete. The family remained on the Peterson place until they moved to Seattle in 1966. In 1969 they moved back to Adrian and in 1972 moved to Caldwell. Leola worked for the J R Simplot Co. for 15 years before retiring.
Leola and Monty were together until Monty passed away in 2006. They left a legacy of love behind for their children and grandchildren.
Leola passed away peacefully April 26, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents Grover and Effie Lance, her sister Gaylene, and her brothers Noel, Ed, Clifford, and Grant.
She is survived her beloved baby brother, Olen; her sons, Bruce (Diana) Spelman and Curt (Thomasina) Spelman; her grandchildren, Chris (Angie) Spelman, Casey (Shawn) Sorenson, Mike (Ashley) Spelman, Amber (Karl) Spelman-Tubbs, and Joe (Stacey) Spelman; her great-grandchildren, Kenzy, Hadlee, Kade, Hudson, Monty and Rowan; along with her numerous nieces and nephews that she loved like her own children.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sunset Estates Memory Care and Encompass Home Health for their loving care of Leola over the last few years.
