Leroy Nickel, 83, of Caldwell, died on Monday, May 14, 2018 at home of natural causes. The Silver Fox has returned to his den also known as "Sherwood" & "Nick" by family and friends.
Leroy had been fighting a yearlong courageous battle with heart & kidney failure. His Angels finally decided he had suffered long enough and took him home. Leroy was born in Wheatland, WY on May 27, 1934 to Jake & Margaret Nickel, they had 12 children. Leroy's mom raised all 12 on her own after Jake died unexpectedly.
Leroy was married to Doris Nickel and they were blessed with 2 sons, and 2 daughters. They later divorced. He married Mary E. Welty and they have been together 45 years. He worked in his 20's at the creamery, and then took a job with Cherry Construction as a hod carrier. Leroy then joined his brother Norman Nickel in the masonry business as a partner they worked in the masonry business for many years, when Norman retired his nephew Don Nickel became his partner. In total Leroy had over 50 years in the masonry business and their excellent craftsmanship was known all over the valley. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge for 56 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Nickel, 2 daughters: Janice Lavoy and Carol Cole, 1 sister, Irene Hertig, many grandchildren & great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many other loved relatives. Leroy is preceded in death by 7 brothers, 3 sisters, a sister-in-law, nephews, 2 sons, uncles and aunts, and many friends.
Leroy's graveside service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Idaho. Services are under the care of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Lunch to follow at Elks Lodge in Caldwell, ID.
