I was just 21 years old trying to figure out life when I started working at NIFC's Radio Cache. Right away, Monte took me under his wing and warmly welcomed me into his life. Most fire seasons we worked the 6pm to 6am shift and had several life conversations out on tarmac in the middle of the night. I appreciated and needed those moments greatly.
In 2003 I was laid off at NIFC, 9 days before Christmas. Monte didn't have a lot of money as he looked over many others. On my last day he gave me a card I still cherish with a 20.00 bill. He wrote "it is time to stretch your wings." I made sure to send him a graduation announcement for my MSW in 2012 so he knew I was stretching.
Thank you my good friend for caring, even though I was a "young kid," for staying true to who you are, modeling hard work and showing me it doesn't matter how much you have in your wallet, being kind and friendly doesn't cost a thing.
Sending my love and deepest sympathies to Kate and the Sanborn family. Monte made a huge impact on my life, I'll never forget him.
