Norman "Hutch" Hutchings
November 16, 1923 - December 24, 2015
Norman "Hutch" Hutchings passed away December 24, 2015 at home at the age of 92. He was the second of four children born to Bert and Nina Hutchings on November 16, 1923 in Boise, ID. Hutch initially attended Boise High School and then graduated from Meridian High School in 1942. In his high school years, Hutch sat out a full year to work and earn a living for his family. The following year, he returned to high school and graduated. After graduating from Meridian High, Hutch met the love of his life, Maurine Thornton, in July 1942, by stealing her hair ribbon in church. They were married October 10, 1944. Hutch joined the Air Force in April 1943, spent 36 months in service to his country, with his last place of duty being Stead Air Force Base in Reno, Nevada. Upon returning to Boise, he began work at the Salt Lake Hardware Company. Starting in April 1945, he worked in the warehouse and then became an accomplished traveling salesman until 1961. For a brief time, he sold mutual funds until a former colleague approached him to work at Robertson Supply. There he started as an outside sales person and became head of inside sales and purchasing manager, where he worked until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, Hutch and Maurine traveled extensively to all 50 states and several provinces in Canada over a 20 year period. They met many people and made lifetime friendships. Throughout their lives, they had great passion for all types of dancing, but particularly ballroom dancing. Even with declining health, he could still show his dance moves while using his walker with perfect rhythm at his granddaughter's wedding in 2012. Their lives were enriched by the births of their two children, Debbie born April 1951 and Kim born December 1955.
Hutch is survived by Maurine, his wife of 71 years; daughter Debbie; son Kim (Trina); granddaughter Amy Blackledge (Tom) of Puyallup, WA; grandsons, Zach Barnes of Meridian, Ryan Hutchings of Kuna, and Chris Hutchings of Boise; great grandsons, Preston Barnes, Ethan Hutchings, and Hunter Hutchings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Merle Sorenson; brothers, Bill and Bob Hutchings; as well as his son-in-law, Gary Barnes.
A heartfelt thank you to Heart & Home Hospice for their compassionate care of Hutch. A very special thank you to Carolyn Adams for her tireless care of Hutch, enabling him to remain at home.
A celebration of Hutch's life will be held Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Summers Funeral Homes, Ustick Chapel. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.summersfuneral.com
