Robert Norman Baker
October 22, 1928 - July 25, 2015
Robert Norman Baker, 86, of Caldwell, died Saturday, July 25, 2015. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell.
Bob was born October 22, 1928, in Whittier, CA, the only child of Jack and Mary (Crowe) Baker. He attended school in Whittier and Coachella Valley, CA. In 1945 Bob's father passed away and Bob and his mother moved from Coachella back to Whittier. In 1946 Bob's mother married David Allred and they moved to Caldwell in 1954. Despite his physical disabilities, Bob worked 41 years as a builder's assistant with his step-father and mother in their construction business.
For more than 20 years Bob dedicated his life to serving the patients and staff as a volunteer at West Valley Medical Center. In 2002 his volunteer hours averaged 54 hours per week. During his tenure at WVMC, he donated almost 25,000 volunteer hours. This is truly remarkable in that he was born with physical disabilities that limited his mobility and the use of his hands.
In January 2005 Bob moved to Autumn Wind Assisted Living. Even though Bob wanted to make this move, he was very concerned that he would not be able to volunteer any longer. With the help of Autumn Winds and volunteers he was able to continue his true passion in life. The license plate on his electric cart said it all," I Love WVMC." In 2002 he was named employee/volunteer of the year by the hospital staff. In 2002 he received the National First Humanitarian Award for his outstanding humanitarian and volunteer activities. Bob loved volunteering at the hospital as everyone was very nice to him and he considered them his family.
Bob was a very spiritual person and was head usher at Memorial Park Baptist Church. He also volunteered many hours of his time at church.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Autumn Winds Assisted Living, XL Hospice, and WVMC for the care and compassion he was shown by all.
Bob is survived by his step-nieces and step-nephew: Terri Schamber, Caldwell; Sharon Beeman, St. Louis, MO; Anita Regehr, Huntington Beach, CA and Craig Allred, Twin Falls.
