After graduating from Dayton High School (Dayton, WA) in 1952, he served for two years in Germany with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, then enrolled at Western Washington College in Bellingham, Washington. Bob also served for more than 30 years as a member of the Caldwell Industrial Airport Commission, with many of those years as Commission Chairman, and was recently recognized by the City of Caldwell for his many years of service to the Airport and the community. In 1991, he obtained an Amateur Radio License (Call number WB7PUS). He was a member of two professional societies, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and the Potato Association of America (PAA), and authored a publication "Current State of the Art in Potato Storage" for an International Conference (Harvest and Postharvest Technologies for Fruit and Vegetables) in Guanajuato, Mexico.
