Rupert Ford "Tom" Thomson
January 21, 1925 - November 12, 2015
Tom passed away at the age of 90 with family and friends at his side. Tom was born in Otego, New York. He began working for the railroad at age 16 and joined the Marines at 17 where he served 22 years being promoted to rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
He served in many Pacific campaigns as a mortar crewman, including Iwo Jima, where he was wounded on the second day. He continued his distinguished service throughout the Korean and Vietnam Wars and retired in 1964.
He was also trained as a Mess Sergeant and carried that skill into private employment with hotels, hospitals and university kitchens. He was an active member of the Caldwell 4th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He also was active in the Caldwell post of the and previously served as its Post Commander.
Tom was preceded into death by his wife Frankie and is survived by sisters Shirley and Rosemary, brother Ed, nephew Don, niece Carolyn, and step-children, William, Harry, Lynn, Clint, and Thresa. He has more than a dozen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise at 10:00 am on November 17th. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with his servant's heart, Tom has requested that charitable donations be made to the Carrie L. French Chapter #1, , PO Box 1362, Caldwell, Idaho, 83606.
