Ruth Elaine Caldwell
January 29, 1934 - October 25, 2016
Ruth was born in Corona, CA on January 29, 1934, to Ronald and Sibyl (Cairns) Fitch and passed away peacefully on October 25, 2016, in her home in Nampa, ID. As a child she lived on her father's dairy farm in Riverside, CA up until the start of World War II. At that time her father moved the family to Long Beach, CA to work in the shipyards. After the war the family moved back to Riverside.
Ruth graduated from Poly High School, class of 1951, and went to work for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph as a switchboard operator. Shortly afterwards she married Donald Upton and had three boys, Merle, James "Gym", and Michael "Mike" however, the marriage was short lived.
In 1959 she married David Caldwell (Dave) whom she worked with at the telephone company and Dave adopted the three boys. This allowed Ruth to quit working and become a full time mother. In 1960 Ruth and Dave had another child, Daniel (Dan). The family lived in Riverside and the boys were very active in 4-H, Future Farmers of America, high school athletics, and music.
In 1970, Ruth and Dave bought, and moved the family, to a 40 acre farm in Nampa, Idaho. They remained very active in raising and supporting their boys as well as managing their new farm.
Ruth had many hobbies and interests and was active in the Meridian Athletic Aux., bowling on league and participating at target shooting clubs. She was an excellent cook, could sew and painted beautifully on oil canvas. After Dave retired in 1985, they camped, fished, and traveled extensively. Ruth and Dave both remained in their home until their deaths.
Ruth was a very kind and generous person. Her friends and families have very fond memories of holidays and gatherings in her and Dave's home. She was very active in all of her children and grandchildren's lives and supported them with encouragement and sage advice.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Roger Fitch and eldest son, Merle Caldwell. Ruth is survived by her sons: Gym Caldwell, Mike (Julie) Caldwell, Dan (Melanie) Caldwell, and grandchildren: Adam, Jenevieve, Mason, Melanie, Marie, Mickey, Alan, Stevi, Kristi and 14 great-grandchildren.
