Vernon Edward Hooker
August 4, 1930 - January 10, 2015
Vernon Edward Hooker of Nampa, Idaho passed away January 10, 2015 with his family by his side. Vern was born August 4, 1930 in New Plymouth, Idaho at his grandparent's home to Russell and Lura Hooker. Vern grew up in Nampa and graduated from Nampa High School in 1948. He enlisted with the Naval Reserve prior to graduating high school and served until January of 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force immediately after and served during the Korean War.
He married the love of his life Carol Poulsen on March 7, 1953. Vern was employed by Mountain Bell Telephone company for several years. The telephone company took the family from the Nampa area to Twin Falls, and eventually to Pocatello, Idaho in 1967 where Vern retired from the telephone company at age 53. He and Carol moved back to Nampa in 1989.
Vern enjoyed camping with friends and family and eventually purchased a cabin in Island Park which he and the family enjoyed for many years. During retirement, he and Carol spent time traveling to Arizona during the winter months. During the past several years, he and Carol loved spending time in Oregon at Eagle Crest, and loved hanging out at Glen Eden Beach on the Oregon Coast.
Vern loved spending time with his grandchildren creating many fond memories. He always supported the many activities his children and grandchildren were involved in. Vern's most memorable attribute was his dry sense of humor which has been passed on to his boys and his grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, sisters Eileen, Anita, and his daughter in-law Renee. Vern is survived by Carol, his wife of 62 years of Nampa, sister Margy Newby (Neal), of Nampa, sons Randy (Paula), of Eagle, ID, Brad of Pocatello, ID, and Clay (Marshell), of Ontario, OR. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held Thursday morning, January 15. There will be a celebration of Vern's life on Thursday, January 15, at 1:00 pm at the Silver Crest Estates II Clubhouse.
