Robert Briggs Obituary

Robert L. Briggs
March 19, 1926 - June 23, 2013

The family of Robert L. Briggs sadly announces the passing of their beloved brother and uncle. Born in Gooding, Idaho, on March 19th, 1926, the second son and third child of Pearle and Fergus Briggs, he passed away from a second heart attack within a six week period in his beloved City by the Bay, San Francisco, on June 23rd, 2013, at the age of 87.

Raised in Gooding and Pocatello, where his father owned and operated the National Laundry and Dry Cleaners, he graduated from Pocatello High in 1944 with a keen interest in journalism. Following one semester at Idaho State University, he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a military journalist.

During the latter days of World War II he served on the aircraft carrier USS Commencement Bay whose primary duty was conveying aircraft to different Pacific bases as the United States began preparations to invade Japan. Honorably discharged on completion of his four-year commitment he used the GI Bill plus a scholarship to attend Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, where he obtained his B.A. in business and also secured a teaching certificate. He later attended graduate school at the University of Oregon.

He landed his first teaching position in Wenatchee, Washington, as an instructor at Wenatchee Valley College. He followed that with a principal's position in LaCenter, Washington. In the late 50's he moved to San Francisco where he began his long and distinguished career teaching business law, typing and later computer technology in the Daly City school district.
.
He was one of the first educators to recognize the latent power of the computer and was cited in newspaper stories at the time for pioneering the placement of computers in the schools-with Daly City being one of the very first school districts to adopt wide-spread use.

He loved to travel during the summers, visiting various countries and most of the states. An indefatigable walker he spent weekend mornings pursuing his long walk on Mt. Tamaulipas just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. He loved biographies, to talk politics and to listen to the San Francisco Symphony.

He especially enjoyed visiting his brothers and sisters and doted on all his nieces and nephews, who adored him and enjoyed listening to stories of his travels often supplemented by an extensive collection of photographs he took while traveling. He attended San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church and was a Rotarian. He never married.

He was pre-deceased by older brother, Fergus, Jr., of Pocatello; older sister Margaret L. Carlson, of Spokane; and younger brother, Jack, of North Fork, Idaho. He is survived by younger sister, Monna, of Portland, Oregon; and older brother, Rolla (Ardis) of Boise. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

At his request no services or memorial was or will be held.
