Bettie (Jackson) Ferguson

1935 - 2015 Obituary Condolences
Bettie Jackson Ferguson
1935 ~ 2015
Bettie Jackson Ferguson passed from this life to be with her God and Redeemer on August 18, 2015.
Bettie was born to Benton and Louise Jackson in St. Luke's Hospital, Boise, Idaho on July 29, 1935. She completed her elementary schooling in Boise schools and graduated from Concordia High School, Seward, Nebraska in 1953. She continued her education at Valparaiso University, and graduated with a B.A. degree from the College of Idaho in 1957. While there, she met Jerry Ferguson, whom she married in 1957. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Jeri Lou, Bonnie, and Scott.
In addition to being a wife and mother, Bettie thoroughly enjoyed a career in education. After her graduation from the College of Idaho, she taught for two years in Homedale Idaho and one at South Junior High in Boise. Then Jerry's career took the young couple to Washington State and Bettie's teaching career was interrupted for a few years while she stayed home with their young children.
When Bettie resumed her teaching career, it was in Washington where she taught history and English various times at Sunnyside High School, Grandview Junior High, and Grandview High School. Bettie also continued her higher education. When her youngest child went off to college, she sought and completed a M. A. degree in history from Central Washington University in 1990. Her Master's Thesis was awarded the C.W.U.'s Distinguished Thesis Award in that year. Bettie was awarded the 1988 Secondary Teacher of the Year Award, the first Grandview High School teacher to be so awarded.
In addition to her family and educational involvement, Bettie played an active role in the community of Grandview, Washington. She served as a Campfire leader, a ten year member of the community library board, both a deacon and an elder at Bethany Presbyterian Church, and past president of Chapter AU, P.E.O.
After retirement, the Fergusons returned to the Treasure Valley. Here too, Bettie remained active. In Boise she was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon, in PEO Chapter R where she served once as president and Chapter BN, Assistance League, Fortnightly and Rotary Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Jerry Ferguson. Surviving Bettie are Jeri Lou (Ed) Tharp—grandchildren, Hunter and Hannah Timmons; Bonnie (Rob) Nichols—grandchildren Brandon and Derek, and Scott (Kary) Ferguson—grandchildren, Sean, Connor and Collin.
The memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 23 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boise Rescue Mission.
