Casilda Voorhees Obituary
Casilda "Cassie" Aguirre Voorhees lived to be 97 years old. She passed away of natural causes peacefully in her sleep on June 11, 2018 in Boise, Idaho.
Cassie's family traveled to Boise from the Basque country at the turn of the 20th century. Her father, Candido Aguirre, worked at the barber shop in the Owyhee Plaza hotel. Her mother, Narcissa Aguirre, learned English by going to watch movies at the Egyptian Theater. They had four children who they raised in Boise.
Cassie was their oldest child and was born on April 20, 1921. She married Leslie Voorhees of Meridian, Idaho who served in the Marine Corps during World War II. They had one daughter, Sharon, who graduated from Idaho State University, worked for Boise Cascade, and started a family on the Boise bench.
Cassie loved her brothers and sister and recalled their memories often: Louise Jenkins (who danced with actor Jimmy Stewart at the Gowen Field Officer's Club), Coston Aguirre (who earned the Purple Heart during World War II), and Louis Aguirre (who proudly served in the US military).
Cassie had incredible inner strength. Having sadly lost most of her immediate family, husband, and daughter by the time she was 62, Cassie continued to live life to the fullest in her home on Overland Road. She was a huge movie fan and took her grandson to a film every Friday night for years. She was an avid reader and delighted in going to the Boise Library where she always watched for the latest Stephen King release. She loved animals dearly and a dog or stray cat always seemed to find their way to live with Cassie. She was big on the news and could always be counted on for having a strong opinion about our country's leaders or the latest celebrity gossip.
Cassie did things her way while always being kind and caring. Her personality was young at-heart and full of life. Age never slowed her down and her liking of R-rated action movies, love of Basque culture, and hearty laugh fit perfectly with her marvelous, eye-catching head of full, grey and white hair.
Cassie is survived by her grandson John Drake, his wife Wendi, and Cassie's great-grandchildren, Taylor and Alex Drake. She is also survived by her nephews: Les Jenkins and Mark Aguirre; niece, Candy Aguirre, and each of their respective children and grandchildren, as well as the families of her late nephews, Roger and Ray Aguirre.
If you would like to do anything in memory of Cassie the family would like to encourage involvement and support of the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise.
Private services will be held at Morris Hill Cemetery. Remembrances may be left for the family at www.AccentFuneral.com. Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian.
