David Michael Carney
1969-2017
David Michael Carney passed away on May 29, 2017, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, surrounded by his loving family. Dave was born on September 23, 1969, in Boise, ID, and was on the go from day one. His passion for year-round outdoor life bloomed early in childhood, starting with summer family camping trips and winter weekends flying down the ski slopes of Bogus Basin. His grace on skis was unsurpassed by any in his family, and by the age of 16 he started working as a ski instructor at Bogus Basin. After high school Dave explored living in Southern California, and graduated in 1994 with a degree in Environmental Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Dave returned to Boise, continued working as a ski instructor and spent a few years working at Peter Schott's. There, he met his future wife, Katherine Hamilton, and their courtship included long walks in the woods with three dogs. They married in 2001, and had two sons, Duncan and Jacob.
For the past 17 years, Dave spent his summers working as a wildland firefighter for the Forest Service, rappelling out of helicopters, fighting fire, and training others to do so. In winter, he worked at Bogus, as a widely-respected, patient, and sought-after ski instructor. He was always available to train any family member, too, and his boys, nieces and nephews all benefited from his cheerful, patient instruction.
Dave was an incredibly loving and dedicated father to Duncan and Jacob. He lived every moment to the fullest with them, and instilled in them his enthusiasm for an active life. The family spent hours biking, camping, skiing, and fishing. Dave devoted time to homework help, too, and supporting the boys' many interests. He rallied the whole family to tackle home tasks, knocking things off the list with efficiency, hard work, and determination. This willingness to give time and effort went beyond his immediate homelife, as he often spearheaded efforts to help extended family.
Dave had a generous, kind, mischievous, honest and courageous spirit. As a man of few words, he made them count -- dropping hilarious one-liners with perfect timing. He was fully present in his own life, and in the lives of those he loved, and will be deeply missed.
In addition to his adoring wife Katherine Carney and beloved sons Duncan (14) and Jacob (12), Dave is survived by his proud parents, Kathy and Michael Carney of Boise, devoted siblings Kelly Lavan (David, Ruth, and Alice) of Evanston, IL, Jason Carney (Michele, Quinn, Ellie, and Jane) of Boise, Melinda Miller (Jonathan, Emma, and Ollie) of Portland, OR, and his loving in-laws, Carl and Lynell Hamilton of Nampa, ID, and Carl Vern Hamilton of Boise, ID.
A Viewing and Visitation will be held for family and friends on Friday June 9, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Boise Funeral Home (8209 W. Fairview Ave. Phone 322-3999). A Memorial Service will follow on Saturday June 10, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Rockies Church (717 N 11th St Boise 83702) A Reception will follow the Memorial Service at 2563 E Bernice Dr Meridian 83646 with additional parking at River Valley Elementary School. I knew David through Junior High & High School. He was always very kind and quiet. I only found out of his passing through our 30 year high school reunion. I am so very sorry for your family's loss. He was much to young to be taken so soon. My prayers are with you in this very sad time.

As summer looms, so does fire season, a time when we would see so many familiar faces. And no matter where we would end up, invariably there was Dave, his smiling face greeting you, often at Lucky Peak. It has been such a pleasure to have worked with such a fine Crewmember, firefighter and friend. We will surely miss him, not only this season, but those in the future too.
And then there was winter, with more adventures and fun, this time at Bogus Basin, where we would try to keep up with him on the slopes! He would patiently wait at the lift and ski a few runs with us, always finding time to catchup, talk about his family, chat about the last fire season, and be looking forward to the next. His mischevious smile and laugh made you see the bright side of anything, and he will be dearly missed.
Our thoughts and prayers go to his family , and only hope they find comfort in knowing what an amazing person Dave was, and what an honor it has been knowing and working with him,
God speed, Skip and Bonnie

Both of my Daughters are devastated by Dave's loss. My oldest Daughter, Rachel, first met Dave when she began working as a ski instructor at Bogus Basin. He worked with her to be an instructor and to become a better instructor, as well as a clinician as she achieved her teaching certifications. A few years ago, when she joined the Lucky Peak Helitack crew, Dave was there to help and mentor her - she knew he had her back. Michelle (Shelley), my younger Daughter also met Dave while working as a chair rider and then when she became an instructor. Both girls always talked about how good Dave was to them. Because of this, I cherish Dave too!

The family has my deepest condolences on the loss of such a great man!!

David loved his family, and I didn't have to know him that well to see it. I didn't spend a lot of time around David because I watched the boys during the summers when he was working. Every time he was home I would have a few days off so he could spend time with his boys. Every time he called the house the joy in his voice would drop when he found out it was me picking up and not his beautiful wife. I would promise to have her call as soon as she was home. Every time the phone would ring the boys ran down the stairs to see if it was their dad. They always had the biggest smiles on their faces when it was. They would chat my ear off about when their dad was coming home next and what they would do with him when he did. He was gone for most of the summers doing a selfless job. But he loved his family and it was easy to tell. It was even easier to tell that they loved him too. I'm sorry I couldn't have spent more time with him but I had the blessing of getting to spend time with his amazing family. We are all very lucky to have had this wonderful man in our lives.

In the short time we have known Katherine we quickly became much aware of David's loving presence in her life and family. Even though we have been closely connected to her parents we have just had the pleasure of meeting Katherine. In that short span of time David obviously emerged as an example of selfless giving of oneself. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this time of sorrow.

It breaks my heart to hear about Dave. He was always such a good, down-to-earth person to be on fire assignments with. He had such a special, loving spirit. He will be greatly missed and fire has truly lost a genuine soul.

You will be missed by so many people. I am so lucky to have been able to call you a friend for the last 31 years. Even with our gaps over the time, when I saw you, it was like no time had passed. My thoughts are with your family and I will think of you often. Dave-you were truly "The Good Guy".
