Jarl Sorman 1923-2009 Long-time Boise resident, Jarl " Jerry" Sorman, age 86, passed away on Sept. 22, 2009, in Verona, Wis. Jerry moved from Idaho to Wisconsin in March to be close to his family during his last round of life. Jerry was born Jan. 5, 1923, in New York City to Nils and Estelle (Ross) Sorman. He was proud of his 100% Swedish heritage and claimed to be a fierce Viking. At the start of World War II, Jerry enlisted in the Army Air Forces where he served in the American Theater and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, with specialty as a gunnery instructor. After his discharge, Jerry married Doris Hickman on June 26, 1948, in Boise. In 1953, they delighted in the birth of their daughter, Kristin Iris. During the 1950s, Jerry served as the Boise Station Manager for Empire Air Lines and West Coast Airlines. He then joined Blue Cross of Idaho as an agent before moving to a successful career in broadcast sales. Jerry was named Vice-President and Sales Manager for KBOI Radio and later was Account Executive for KBCI Television, retiring in 1987. Jerry was a scratch golfer, won frequently in local tournaments and played three times a week until he was 80. His family meant the world to him, and his daughter remembers many hours of playing Annie Oakley to her dad's Lofty in the playhouse he built for her. Jerry and Doris spent over 35 joyful years together, and he was greatly saddened by her early passing in 1984. Later that year, Jerry welcomed his new son-in-law when Kristin married Robert Jeffries in Portland, Ore. When his namesake, Ethan Jarl, was born in 1988, he advised "give your all, never hold any love back." Many visits were exchanged between Portland and Boise, as Jerry watched his grandson grow into a "fine young man" off to college and life. In his last years in Boise, Jerry formed a close circle of friends at the Moxie Java Café, who were most kind to the elder gentleman in their midst. Also, Jerry grew close to his caregivers who supported him in his home, with special fondness for his nursing aide Cindy Pinto and his care manager Lynne Smith. In March 2009, Jerry moved to Willow Pointe Assisted Living in Verona, Wis., to be near his daughter and her family. Jerry was preceded in death by his dearly loved wife, Doris; his parents; his brother, Ross; his dear sister-in-law, Iris Hoffman; and other family. He is survived by his daughter, Kristin (Rob) Jeffries, and beloved grandson, Ethan Jarl, all of Middleton, Wisconsin; his brother-in-law, James Hoffman, of Boise; and several cousins, nephews, nieces and a grand-niece. The family wishes to thank the following for their support and encouragement: Idaho - Lynne Smith at Senior Solutions; Cindy Pinto and Mike Briggs at Horizon Home Health; Dr. Bill Bollinger at St. Luke's Internal Medicine; Dinah Werries at Mountain West Bank; and Friends and Staff at Moxie Java Café. Wisconsin - Paulette Glunn and the wonderful caregivers at Willow Pointe Memory Care in Verona; the amazing Nurses, Social Workers, Chaplain and Staff at HospiceCare-Madison; and Dr. David Sorber at Dean West Clinic. Interment will be in Dry Creek Cemetery, with a remembrance celebration planned for next spring in Boise. Arrangements are under the direction of Gunderson Funeral Home in Middleton, Wis., in collaboration with Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise. Condolences may be mailed to the Jeffries Family, 3783 Caribou Rd., Verona, WI 53593, or submitted online to one of the funeral homes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Senior Solutions, 3010 West State Street, Suite 120, Boise, ID 83703; or HospiceCare of Madison, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
