John O'Brien Obituary
John Joseph O'Brien
1951-2018
John Joseph O'Brien, 66 of Meridian, Idaho passed away on Wednesday August 8, 2018. John was born on September 14, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland to John Sr. and Nina O'Brien. John attended the University of South Carolina and joined the U.S. Navy where he retired Master Chief Boiler Technician serving from 1970 to 1992. After Naval retirement, he became a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Marines, and worked the Michigan Great Lakes as well as the open waters of Korea and Japan. He finished his career on the Mississippi River as a Chief Engineer for the American Queen Steamboat Company.
John loved talking about the marine industry and the adventures of his profession. He was private about his personal affairs, but loved sharing stories and experiences with all his children and grandchildren. He was careful with life plans and investment opportunities, always having a plan A, B, and C just in case things didn't go as expected. His passions included riding his Goldwing motorcycle and generously supporting family, friends, and charity organizations; he was a man of dignity, honor, and integrity. John was a magnet that held his family together, always making the effort to visit each of his children as often as time allowed.
His legacy will live forever and he will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched. John is survived by his wife Cindy O'Brien; his sister Sharon K. O'Brien Lowry (Denton Texas); his daughters Daveita Gilbertson (San Diego), Teri Zych (San Diego), Emilee O'Brien (Nampa), Jennifer Hartway (Kuna), Andrea Berry (Boise); his sons Jef Lindenmayer (San Diego), Thomas Berry (Meridian); and 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Robert O'Brien.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Bowman Funeral Parlor located at 10254 W. Carlton Bay Dr., Garden City. A committal service will follow at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery located at 10100 N. Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude's, the Idaho Food Bank or the Boise Rescue Mission.
