Karen Thorp Sbona Jones Obituary
Karen (Sbona) Jones
1944 - 2018
Karen Thorp (Sbona) Jones passed away on September 8, 2018 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Karen Thorp was born in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington on February 12, 1944. After living in Massachusetts for a short time, her family moved to the town of Pleasant Hill, California where Karen grew up and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School.
Karen married Gary J. Sbona in June 1962 and had two children, Denise Marie Sbona and Matthew John Sbona. In 1971, the family moved to Boise, Idaho. Karen and Gary would eventually separate and divorce in 1981, however, Karen would spend the rest of her years in Boise and the Eagle area.
After raising two children, Karen would go back to school and attend Boise State University. She graduated from BSU on May 12, 1991, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Cum Laude, in Nursing.
She would meet Warren E. Jones in 1982 and they would spend the next 36 years together, marrying on April 9, 1999.
While studying for her nursing degree, Karen worked at St. Luke's Hospital (Boise) as a Unit Clerk and continued her employment there as an R.N. for 10 years. After working at the hospital, she moved to St. Luke's Women's Clinic, supporting Dr. Dean T. Watkins MD, where she worked an additional 10 years until his retirement.
Karen was an avid gardener, even becoming a certified Idaho Master Gardener. A favorite day would include wandering through nurseries looking at plants or working in her beautiful garden. With her friends, she learned and enjoyed various arts and crafts such as quilting, needlepoint, crochet and jewelry making. Her dry, quick wit and sense of humor made her fun to be around and she always loved to spend time with her family and friends.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Ora Thorp, sister Sandra Thorp and sister Valerie Kicherer. Her husband, Warren, passed away 5 days prior to her death, after suffering a second stroke. Karen is survived by her brother, Malcom Thorp of Utah, daughter Denise Sbona of Morgan Hill, California and son Matt Sbona of San Jose, California as well as the granddaughters she loved and adored, Katie and Kelly Failner.
When asked how she coped and got through the difficult times or challenges she faced, Karen would always say, 'I take a moment and a big breath, make a plan and keep moving forward.' That's how she lived her life and the strength and perseverance she showed over the years. To all those who knew and loved Karen, to those who were touched by her spirit (even if only briefly) now will feel the void of her presence, will miss her funny, quick wit and the sound of her laughter.
But now, by her example, we all know what we must do. We must take a moment and a big breath, make a plan…and keep moving forward.
At Karen's request, no formal funeral service will be held. Her body will be cremated and interred in Boise's Dry Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation be made to either the Idaho Botanical Garden (idahobotanicalgarden.org) or the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (ovarian.org).
