Ruth Higgins Obituary
December 7, 1922 – May 10, 2018
Ruth Higgins, 95, passed away peacefully at her apartment at Morningstar Senior Living on Thursday, May 10, 2018.
Born Evelyn Ruth Higgins to Ida Viola Rexford and Floyd L. Loomis on December, 7, 1922 on the farm near Donnelly, Idaho. She was the youngest of three children. Her older brothers took sport in teasing her.
Ruth attended a one-room schoolhouse down the lane from the farm then went to high school in Donnelly. At five-foot-two, she played forward on the high school basketball team. She graduated in 1940 and was Valedictorian of her class.
After high school, Ruth attended Link's School of Business to learn bookkeeping. She worked for architect Nat Adams until she married.
Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Bert Higgins on October 30, 1943 in Tulare, California. She followed Bert around the United States while he attended B-17 flight school, flight training, and received his assignment as an instructor pilot. They had four children, Rod, Evelyn, Dennis, and Gretchen.
After the war, when Bert's insurance business began to grow, Ruth joined the company to help out. It was intended to be temporary, but she continued working at Higgins and Rutledge Insurance until she was in her early 90s.
Ruth traveled extensively with Bert to many insurance industry conventions as well as on vacations. She also went on trips with each of her daughters. She enjoyed traveling and learning about the history of places she visited. On car trips, she always found the historic sites and made Bert stop so she could see them. Places she visited include: Europe, the Holy Lands, Australia, New Zealand, Panama Canal, and all over the United States.
Ruth was a member of the Jaycee-ettes and Elkettes. Back in those days, women wore elegant ball gowns and Ruth sewed all of her own dresses, as well as costumes for theme parties. She was a member of Birthday Club and Bridge Club.
In addition to sewing she always had a crochet project in progress. She crocheted afghans for each of her grandchildren and also for donation to Ronald McDonald House in Boise.
In December 2015, Ruth relocated from the Brumback house to Morningstar Senior Living. There she happily watched the birds on the feeders outside her window, sang along to the musical entertainment, and never missed her glass of white zin at happy hour on Fridays.
Ruth is survived by her children Rod (Chris) Higgins, Evelyn Higgins, Dennis (Nikki) Higgins, and Gretchen Mullins and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband (Bert Higgins), parents (Viola and Floyd Loomis), brother and sister-in-law (Donald and Sybill Loomis), granddaughter (Megan Alden), great-grandson (Nick Stover), grandson-in-law (Jim Waters) and son-in-law (Ray Mullins, Jr).
The family thanks MultiCare for the tender and devoted assistance their caregivers provided to our mother. Our thanks also go to Morningstar Senior Living Community and to Keystone Medical and Hospice.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Avenue, Boise. A memorial service will be on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 1:30 also at Alden-Waggoner.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth's name to Ronald McDonald House, St. Luke's NICU, or .
