The Honorable Warren E. Jones passed away on September 3, 2018 at Valley View Rehabilitation Center Boise, Idaho, after suffering a second stroke. The family would like to express their profound gratitude and thanks to the staff at Valley View for the care and compassion they provided to Warren in his final days.
Justice Warren E. Jones is an Idaho native who was born in Montpelier, Idaho in 1943. He attended grade school in Ogden, Utah, spending summers with his grandparents on a farm in Burley, Idaho. He attended high school at Butte County High School in Arco, Idaho, graduating as valedictorian in 1961.
He then attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, where he received his B.A. degree, Magnum Cum Laude, in political science in 1965. He then attended the University of Chicago Law School where he received his J.D. degree in 1968. After his second year of law school, he received a Ford Foundation Fellowship for advanced study in criminal law and procedure at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago.
Following graduation from the University of Chicago in 1968, he returned to Idaho to work as a law clerk in 1968-1970 for the Honorable Joseph J. McFadden, Chief Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court. Justice Jones joined the law firm of Eberle, Berlin, Kading, Turnbow, McKlveen & Jones in 1970 where he later became the firm's senior litigator, specializing in litigation of all types, including negligence, products liability, professional malpractice and commercial litigation. During 37 years with the Eberle Berlin firm, Justice Jones tried over 122 jury cases to a verdict in 38 of the State's 44 counties.
One of the many honors that Warren received was being selected as an Outstanding Alumni of the College of Idaho. Warren was also selected to deliver the graduation address for the senior class.
In July, 2007, he was appointed to be the 55th Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court. Warren served on the Supreme Court for 10 years, and retired in December 2017. Warren was such a dog lover, he would often have his staff bring their dogs to work.
Warren loved all sports but his favorite was baseball. He was a diehard Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs fan. Warren was also an avid golfer and spent many afternoons on the links with his buddies.
Warren and his wife, Karen, were together for over 36 years and the two were married on April 9th 1999. They spent their life in Boise and Eagle, ID.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Shirley and his brother. His wife, Karen, survived him by 5 days, passing away herself after a long battle with cancer. Warren is survived by daughter Denise Sbona of Morgan Hill, California and son Matt Sbona of San Jose, California as well as his beloved granddaughters Katie and Kelly Failner.
At Warren's request, no formal funeral service will be held. His body will be cremated and interred in Boise's Dry Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation be made to the Idaho Humane Society, located in Boise (idahohumanesociety.org).
