Janice Lee Neri Obituary
Janice Lee Neri
1970 - 2016
Janice Lee Neri, 46, died October 14, 2016 after a six-year battle with cancer. She passed away at her home in Boise, Idaho with her husband, Ted, by her side.
Janice was born April 9, 1970 in Louisville, Kentucky, and was raised by her mother, Jane Neri. She went to high school at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, graduating in 1988. She earned her bachelor's degree in history from Pomona College in Claremont, California in 1992 and her doctorate in Visual Studies from the University of California, Irvine in 2003.
She and Ted met at Pomona College and were married in 2000. Their son, Abingdon, was born in 2009.
As an art history and visual culture scholar, Janice's research addressed the role of visual images in the construction of knowledge about nature during the early modern period (1400-1800). Her book, The Insect and the Image: Visualizing Nature in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1700, was published in 2011.
She joined the art department faculty at Boise State University in 2004 after serving for two years as a research associate at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California while completing her doctoral degree. She earned tenure in 2009 and was promoted to full professor at Boise State in 2013.
Janice cared deeply for others and she had a deep commitment to equality and fairness. Her friends, colleagues and students found her to be unfailingly kind, considerate and gentle. Her sense of humor was razor sharp and her wit was unparalleled. Janice loved traveling, especially in England, bicycling and camping with her family. She enjoyed science fiction, obscure movies and knitting. She was an avid reader and an unbeatable opponent at Scrabble and other word puzzle-based games.
Janice is survived by her husband, Ted Apel; her son, Abingdon Apel; and her mother, Jane Neri.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, November 5 at Summers Funeral Home in Boise. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Idaho Food Bank.
